Did you hear the wawu the other day? I saw dark clouds in the sky before the wawu happened. It created such a loud noise that it shook the whole house. We were a bit scared. The next morning, with the wawu gone and the ground still wet, we saw a mushroom sprout near our tree.

DETERMINING THE MEANING OF WORDS USING CONTEXT CLUES
Context clues are hints that the author gives to help define a difficult or unusual word. The clue may appear within the same sentence as the word to wchich it refers, or it may follow in a preceding sentence. CONTEXT CLUES
TYPES OF CONTEXT CLUES DEFINITION In this type, the writer provides a clear and direct definitions of the challenging word/s. Example: Global warning, an increase in the average temperature of the earth’s atmosphere , is what we are expereriencing today.
2 . EXAMPLE In this type, the writer gives examples that help the reader make sense of the unfamiliar word/s. words like “such as,” “like,” “for example,” and “including” introduce example clues. Example: Nonbiodegradable materials such as plastics, tin cans, and bottles should be disposed of properly so they could not block our drainage systems.
3. SYNONYMS AND ANTONYMS In this type, the writer uses words that have either the same meaning or the opposite meaning in reference to the unfamiliar word/s. Example using a synonym as a context clue: My mother has always been passionate in taking care of the environment. She does not fail to share with us her fervent desire to be a good steward of God’s creations.
Example using an antonym as a context clue: Some people do not see how vital coral reefs are that they use dynamite in fishing as if these reefs are not important for the survival of fish.
