BIBLE READING IN CLASS 5
BIBLE READING IN CLASS 1 Peter 1.13-21 13 - Therefore, gird up the loins of your mind, be sober and hope fully in the grace that was offered to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ, 14 - as obedient children, not being conformed to the lusts that were previously in your ignorance; 15 - but as he who called you is holy, so be you holy in all your conduct, 16 - for it is written: Be holy, for I am holy. 6
17 - And if you call upon him as your Father, who, without respect of persons, judges according to each man's work, walk in fear during the time of your pilgrimage, 18 - knowing that it was not with corruptible things, such as silver or gold, that you were redeemed from your vain way of life, which, by tradition, you received from your fathers, 19 - but with the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb spotless and undefiled, 20 - which, indeed, was known in another time, even before the foundation of the world, but manifested, in these last times, for your sake; 21 - and through him you believe in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope were in God. 7
INTRODUCTION The word “consciousness” brings us to the idea of perception of something that is around us, it is the state in which we are awake, awake and lucid in the present time and, therefore, we know that we exist. Thus, the believer in Jesus, who began his journey of faith with Christ, must be aware of living a holy life, without which, the Bible states: “no one will see the Lord” ( Heb 12.14). In this lesson, we will study the importance of holiness in our journey to Heaven. 8

10 I – THE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE OF SANCTIFICATION
I – THE BIBLICAL PERSPECTIVE OF SANCTIFICATION 1. Sanctification in the Old Testament. From the Hebrew qôdesh , holiness is a masculine noun that means “sacredness” , “set apart” , which can refer to God, places, things, something apart, separated. This word derives from the Hebrew verbal root qadash , which brings the idea of “consecrate”, “sanctify”, “prepare”, “dedicate”, “be consecrated”, “be holy”, “be sanctified”, “be separated” . In this sense, the word qôdesh appears approximately 469 times in the Old Testament as holiness (Ex 15.11), holy thing (Nm 4.15), sanctuary (Ex 36.4). Furthermore, the adjective qâdôsh , very present in the Pentateuch, the first books of the Bible, brings the idea of a day, a person or a nation entirely consecrated, separated, sanctified to God (Gen 2.3 Ex 19.6). 11
2. In the New Testament. The Greek verb hagiadzô , meaning “sanctify” , brings the idea of “making holy” , “purifying or consecrating” , “venerating” , “being holy” . This term encompasses the meaning of the believer becoming pure, so as to be purified and sanctified by the gracious work of the Holy Ghost (1 Cor 6:11). In this sense, in the New Testament, the holiness wrought in the life of the believer is an authentic work from above ( Eph 5.26; 1 Thes 5.23). 12
3. The holiness demanded by the Word. On our Christian journey to Heaven, God's Word demands holiness in all areas of our lives. This is because the word of truth sanctifies us (John 17:17). In this way, the believer in Jesus cannot be committed to sinful behavior, since in his daily work, he is committed to seeking a holy lifestyle, as he knows that without it we cannot see the Lord ( Heb 12.14 ). 13
The Word of God points out the holy lifestyle without which we cannot please God. SYNOPSIS I 14
15 II – SANCTIFICATION AND ITS STAGES
16 1. The reality of sanctification. Based on what we have studied about the biblical terms regarding sanctification, we can say that it is an act, a state and a process by which the sinner becomes holy (Rm 6.19-22; 1 Thes 4.1-7). First, sanctification is an act of separation from the world. Secondly, it is a process whose purpose is to lead the Christian to become similar to our Lord Jesus Christ (Rm 8.29). Thus, sanctification seeks to perfect the believer so that the image of Christ is fully reflected in their life (2 Cor 7.1; Eph 4.12,13; 5.26). In this case, biblical sanctification is a process that encompasses at least three stages: Initial (positional) Sanctification, Progressive Sanctification, and Glorification . II – SANCTIFICATION AND ITS STAGES
17 2. Three stages of sanctification. Firstly, the sanctification of the believer begins with the New Birth, because through the Holy Ghost, the believer is declared righteous before God, completely regenerated, declared without sin; it is initial or positional sanctification (1 Cor 6.11). Secondly, there is the progressive stage of sanctification in this world, in which the believer puts off the “old man” and puts on the “new man” until he reaches the perfect image of Christ (Gal 5.16-18; Eph 4.20-24 ,27-30). This stage leads to the last: that of glorification. This is the moment when the believer will be as Jesus is (Rom 8.29; 1 John 3.2) and will receive a resurrection body just like that of our Lord, on the occasion of his appearance after the resurrection (John 20.24-29; cf. 1 Thes 4.13 -18).
18 3. The aim of sanctification. According to the study of the three stages of sanctification, we realize that the purpose of sanctification is to make the believer perfectly consistent with the fullness of the divine character (Mt 5.8). In this aspect, every regenerate believer is called by God to hear, keep and practice his commandments, so that it is his holy habitation of God (John 14:23).
Sanctification is an act, a state and a process by which the sinner becomes holy. SYNOPSIS II 19
20 III – THE JUDGMENT OF THE HOLY GOD
21 III – THE JUDGMENT OF THE HOLY GOD 1. The Holy God. The Bible reveals God as the Holy One of Israel (Is 1.4), with a Holy name (Is 57.15); the seraphim declare his holiness (Is 6.3) and, in holiness, no one can equal God (1 Sam 2.2). Thus, the Bible emphatically states that God is Holy. Thus, He is our parameter for a life of holiness, as recorded in the biblical text: “You will be holy, because I, the Lord, your God, am holy” (Lev 19.2; cf. 1 Pet 1.16). Therefore, in light of God's holiness, we are called to be holy in our journey.
22 2. Holiness required of all believers. The Church of Christ in this world is the sanctuary dedicated to the Lord ( Eph 2:21). Through our beloved Savior, the Lord Jesus Christ, the Church was sanctified to appear glorious, holy and without blemish before God ( Eph 5.26,27). Therefore, as members of the Body of Christ in this world, purchased by his precious blood, we are exhorted and called upon to walk in holiness ( Heb 12:14). Let us strive to consecrate ourselves to God in true holiness (Rom 12:1)!
23 3. God's holiness and justice. Biblically, holiness and justice are divine attributes that are related. As we have seen, this virtue points to the essence of God, who is totally pure, as John clearly states: “He is light and in Him there is no darkness at all” (1 John 1:5). Everything in God is holy, pure and true. His justice points to his righteousness, to the harmony of his justice with the Law. Therefore, understanding God's holiness and justice as attributes is important for us to recognize that He is holy, upright, just and true. And that, therefore, he will never leave human beings unpunished for their rebellion against his holiness and justice (Gen 6.12,13).
No human being will go unpunished before the holiness and justice of God. SYNOPSIS III 24
25 CONCLUSION On the journey to Heaven, the Christian needs to develop an awareness of God's holiness so that he can take it as the perfect standard of life. We must always progress in holiness from the moment we begin life with Christ until the end of our journey (1 John 2:3). It is time to be aware that God loves everyone and does not want anyone to be lost. However, those who reject a holy life and give themselves over to sin will suffer eternal damnation, as holiness and righteousness are attributes of God that do not contradict each other.
