BIBLE READING IN CLASS 5

BIBLE READING IN CLASS Romans 8.18-25 18 - For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed in us. 19 - For the ardent expectation of the creature awaits the manifestation of the children of God. 20 - For the creation was subject to vanity, not by its will, but because of him who subjected it, 21 - in the hope that the same creature will also be freed from the bondage of corruption, into the freedom of the glory of the children of God. 6

22 - For we know that the whole creation groans and is in labor pains together until now. 23 - And not only she, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, also groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, that is, the redemption of our body. 24 - For in hope we are saved. Now, the hope that is seen is not hope; for what a man sees, how shall he expect it? 25 - But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait patiently for it. 7

INTRODUCTION From the moment the believer is born again, he is called to live a life of hope. In this sense, Christian hope has its foundation in the resurrection of the Lord Jesus (1 Peter 1:3, 21). It is a powerful work of God that moves the Church of Christ to work for the cause of his kingdom. Thus, this week's lesson is intended to expose the teaching of Christian hope and how important it is in our journey to heaven. 8

Keyword : Hope 9

10 I – WHERE DOES THE CHRISTIAN’S HOPE POINT TO?

I – WHERE DOES THE CHRISTIAN’S HOPE POINT TO? 1. Christian hope. According to the New Testament, “hope” is a favorable and confident expectation that is based on what cannot be seen, on the future (Rm 8.24,25). In this case, she can anticipate what is good (Titus 1.2; 1 Peter 1.21). It is no coincidence that the apostle Paul writes that the Christian's hope was established through Christ, the “hope of glory” and “our hope” (Col 1:27; 1 Tim 1:1). Therefore, from a biblical point of view, we can say that hope is “confidence in the fulfillment of a great expectation”. 11

2. Hope in the letters of the apostle Paul. The subject of Christian hope is very present in Paul's apostolic letters. In them, we see hope in the resurrection of the dead in Christ (Acts 23:6; 1 Thess 4:13,14); the hope of the promise being fulfilled (Acts 26:6,7); the hope of righteousness (Gal 5:5); the hope of the Gospel (Col 1.5); the hope of the rapture of the Church (1 Thess 5.8); the hope of the vocation ( Eph 1:18); the hope of eternal life (Titus 1.2; 3.7); and, finally, the hope of the appearing of the glory of God and the Lord Jesus Christ (Titus 2:13). In Paul's First Letter to the Corinthians, hope appears as the second virtue mentioned there (1 Cor 13:13). 12

3. God: the author of our hope. This hope is a consequence of the New Birth in Christ Jesus, so that this process involves a fully supernatural, spiritual work (1 Pet 1.23). Therefore, God is the author of our hope, as the apostle Paul shows in his letter (Rm 15.13). Therefore, through this living hope, we are ready to perseveringly endure all the hardships along our journey to Heaven ( Heb 10.32-36). Now, our faith has been tested by history through cruel persecutions and many other challenges that have always tested us. However, the Church of Christ never succumbed to them, it always prospered and flourished because of a glorious hope that they could never take away from us, the confidence in eternal life with God (Acts 20:24). 13

Christian Hope, which has God as its author, points to the future, a glorious reality SYNOPSIS I 14

15 II – THE ESCATOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF CHRISTIAN HOPE

16 II – THE ESCATOLOGICAL PERSPECTIVE OF CHRISTIAN HOPE 1. The Bible focuses on the future. The story of Creation begins with God. The first book of the Bible, Genesis, reveals this to us. Unfortunately, as the events at the beginning of Genesis unfolded, sin caused disharmony in Creation. However, God acts to make everything perfect, balanced and harmonious again. This is what the apostle Paul reveals through his mention of the cosmic scope of the death of Jesus Christ ( Eph 1:10). This promise originated in Eden, with the woman's descendant, and is revealed today through Christ as the guiding thread of the Holy Scriptures (Gen 3.15; Rev 12.9).

17 2. Hope in the future brings comfort and joy to the believer. The doctrine of the last things, called Eschatology, studies future things. Many live in fear of the future, of what could happen to them, but Christians take comfort and rejoice in what the Bible says about the future (Rm 15.4). In this aspect, what the Word of God says about what awaits us in eternity with Christ is glorious and incomparable, in that the afflictions of the present time cannot be compared with the glory to be revealed in us (Rm 8.18). Thus, the Bible is a book of prophecy that produces joy and comfort in the heart of the believer. In it, we find a sovereign God, who governs our lives and acts in favor of his people.

18 3. Why a doctrine of hope? The reason we have a doctrine of hope is because we trust in the promise of the resurrection of those who died in Christ, of the transformation of those who are alive at his return (1 Thess 4.13-18). It is a glorious promise to reign with Christ. As we have not yet achieved this promise, we live in hope that everything will soon be fulfilled, because whoever made the promise is faithful to fulfill it ( Hb 10.23).

Biblical hope brings comfort and joy to the believer throughout his career. SYNOPSIS II 19

20 III – CHRISTIAN HOPE AS ANCHOR OF THE SOUL

21 III – CHRISTIAN HOPE AS ANCHOR OF THE SOUL 1. Our hope as an anchor. We can describe the anchor as a heavy piece of iron attached to a thick chain and thrown to the bottom of the sea with the purpose of keeping a ship stationary (Acts 27:29). The writer of Hebrews describes Christian hope as a “sure and steadfast anchor of the soul” during the journey with Christ ( Heb 6:18,19). It represents everything that sustains and stabilizes the believer's soul in times of uncertainty.

22 2. Why is the believer's hope the best? This hope that brings certainty to the soul of the saved cannot be compared with the hope of the wicked. The apostle Paul states that, without Christ, there is no hope for human beings ( Eph 2:12). Therefore, it is a vain hope. Consequently, there are several hopes present in human culture. For example, there are religions that express their hope in a cyclical history, as in Hinduism, in which life is seen according to the cycle of birth, death and reincarnation; other people seek to base their hope on astrology, palmistry, among various pagan practices that the Bible prohibits; In politics, many base their hopes on revolutionary actions that are nothing more than illusion. In summary, we can say that all hope outside of Christ is empty, meaningless; hope in Christ is safe, consoling and with purpose (Col 1.27).

23 3. Holding firm to hope. In light of the New Testament, we affirm that the Second Coming of Christ is the great reason for the believer to remain firm and maintain his hope, so that this requires a life of purity to enjoy the promise of being as Jesus is (1 John 3.2, 3). In those days, Christ's disciples understood that his coming would be imminent, that is, it could happen at any time (Mt 25.1-13). Similarly, we must be in readiness, awaiting the day when our Lord will rapture his Church. We do not know the day or hour that the Lord will come, but our part is to keep our hope alive and firm (Luke 18:8).

Hope is an anchor for the soul, as it brings firmness and solidity in uncertain times. SYNOPSIS III 24

25 CONCLUSION Struggles, unpleasantness, trials, death, among other things, those saved in Christ will be able to face all of this based on the true hope that is Christ Jesus, our Lord. This way, we will continue our journey without fear and without losing faith. History has witnessed that Christianity grew and prospered because Christians understood that this life is provisional, being just a part of a much greater whole: eternity with Christ. Therefore, let us hold fast the confession of our hope, for he who promised is faithful ( Heb 10:23).
