CLASSIFICATIONS OF DANCES Dances of the Cordillera Groups Group Dances in Mindanao Spanish/European/Western Influenced Dances Dances of the Countryside Dances of the Less Known Group
Dances of the Cordillera Groups BIBAKIG- Acronym for Bontocs , Ifugao, Benguets , Apayao , Kalinga, Itneg , Ilonggot , and Gaddang . PESHITS & KANYAO- occasions for the presentation of Cordillera dances. Classification: ceremonial, courtship, war, festival, initiative; imitative in nature. Some of the dances are: a. TAKTIK – it is a flirtation/Love or wedding, dance from Western Bontoc . b. PATTONG – Dance by one or two warriors
DINUYYA – From Lagawe Ifugao, it is a dance festival performed by men & women during major feast. TAREKTEK – Among the Benguets , it is a dance imitating the “woodpeckers ”. BENDIAN – it is a victory dance. TURAYEN – Among the Apayaos , it is a dance imitating a high flying bird. TADECK – A kalingga word for dance. RAGRAGSAKAN – A work dance of kalingga women where they carry Baskets on their heads or sometimes Layered clay pots. TAKILING – it is a victory dance perform after a head-hunting spree.
Dances in Mindanao Group These dances have touches Hindu, Japanese,Chinese,and Arab Persian Culture. The following are the dances: KAKULANGAN – Among Maranao, is dance with the use of beautifully decorated umbrella. SAGAYAN – It is a war dance which dramatizes the hero Warrior prince. c. ASIK – It is a doll dance for girls d. SILONG SA GANDING – It show traces of Hindu-Vedic influence, where the five dancers represent the sounds of gandingan.
e. PANG-ALAY – From Jolo Sulu, portrays the varied life activities of the people. f. MAGLANKA – It is dance a noble Saman women. g. BURONG TALO – Is a martial arts dance in the Langka Tradition in Mindanao . g. PINDULAS – Depicts the movement of the fish. h. BINANOG – It is a Manobo hawk dance.
SPANISH/EUROPEAN/WESTERN INFLUENCED DANCES The westernization of Filipino culture brought changes in the style of dancing among Filipino such as Pandango , Habonera , Jota, Valse, Mazurka, Paseo, Rigodon , Lanceros . HABANERA BOTOLENA It is a dance of married couples in Botolan , Zambales. PANDANGO RINCONADA It is a festival dance from the province of Bicol depicting the happy contented life of the people.
Dances of the countryside There were dances for the so called “bourgeois” during the Spanish period, there were also dances for the poor, farmers, and people in the rural areas. Dances were light and more informal. Frequently, the dances require skill and character which depict their kind of world. Some dances are: BINASUAN- Is a dance requires a balancing skill with glasses of wine. BATI – It is a dance performed during Easter Sunday. GAYONG-GAYONG- Is a game dance. BINISLAKAN- which means sticks, is Pangasinan dance that bears the Chinese influence.
DANCES OF THE LESS KNOWN GROUP a. K ADAL BLELAH - It is a T’boli dance with mythical bindings imitative of the movements of the bird. b. KARASAGUYON - It is a courtship dance. c. KADAL TAJO - It is a dance that depicts of the movement of a bird in the middle of the forest.
