MATTER SOLUTIONS AND MIXTURES

Slide Content

Grade 7

Prayer Father God Come be with us today Fill our hearts with joy Fill our minds with learning Fill our lesson with fun Fill our friendship with kindness Fill our school with love AMEN.

Checking of Attendance

What are the steps of scientific method?

Diversity of materials in the environment

And also those things you can’t see like gases rocks p ieces of wood liquids Is filled with different kinds of materials that you can see.

MATTER What is matter? -it is anything that occupies space and has a mass

Because of an abundance form of matter, how can you distinguish one from another?

Characteristics Properties Uses

Substance and Mixtures

Pure substances- always have the same composition

Elements- element  is a pure substance which cannot be broken down by chemical means,

Elements are also referred to as the building blocks of matter because when they react with one another, they form compounds.

Compounds- element  is a pure substance which cannot be broken down by chemical means, Water - Formula: H 2 O =  Hydrogen 2  + Oxygen Hydrogen  Peroxide – Formula: H 2 O 2  =  Hydrogen 2  + Oxygen 2   Salt – Formula: NaCl =  Sodium  + Chlorine Baking Soda  - : NaHCO 3  =  Sodium  +  Hydrogen  + Carbon + Oxygen 3

MIXTURE Plays an important role in the daily activities of people.

Mixture of several gases The gasoline that runs machines contains about 12 to 200 different substance

MIXTURE

Mixture- is a substance with a variable composition formed when two or more substances mix together

Heterogenous-   The  heterogeneous mixture  has a non-uniform composition and has two or more phases. ... It can be separated out physically .

Suspension- is a type of heterogenous mixture that is made up of suspended solid particles that settle to the bottom of suspensions container.

Homogenous- A  homogeneous  mixture is a mixture in which the composition is uniform throughout the mixture .

Homogenous- can be a solutions and colloids solutions

All about Elements

In  1680  Robert Boyle also discovered phosphorus, and it became public. In  1809  at least 47 elements were discovered, and scientists began to see patterns in the characteristics.

In  1869  Russian chemist  Dimitri Mendeleev  started the development of the  periodic table ,

HOW MANY ELEMENTS ARE THERE IN PERIODIC TABLE? 118 Elements

METALS 91 metals Shiny and has a certain luster Except for mercury, metals are solid at room temperature. Good conductors of heat and electricity Ductile- drawn into thin wires Malleable- it can be easily hammered into sheets

Luster, heat, and electrical conductivity, ductility, and malleability are the main physical properties of most metals. Physical Property Is a characteristic that can be observed or measured without changing the identity or composition of the material

NON METALS Gas or brittle Solid No luster Poor Conductors of heat and electricity Brittle and easily be crushed

These materials are made of carbon , oxygen , sulfur, and other nonmetals.

Metalloids Has a properties that are intermediate between those of metals and non metals. For example, metalloids conduct electricity only partially.
