Subject Description Physical Education and Health offers experiential learning for learners to adopt an active life for fitness and lifelong health. The knowledge, skills and understanding which include physical and health literacy competencies support them in accessing, synthesizing, and evaluating information; making informed decisions; enhancing and advocating their own as well as others’ fitness and health . This course on recreational activities is associated with outdoor, natural, or semi-natural settings; it enables learners to move safely and competently in these settings while making a positive relationship with natural environments and promoting their sustainable use. It consists of an array of offerings which learners can choose from.

Objectives 1. Discuss the nature and background of different recreational activities 2. Define outdoor recreation 3. Cite examples of outdoor recreational activities 4. Recognize the benefits of outdoor recreation 5. Identify and engage in moderate to vigorous physical activities

Lesson 2 Nature and Background of Recreation Recreation – Refers to activities that take place during an experience known as leisure. Recreational activities may be classified as: Passive Recreation – refers to activities done during leisure but at a sedentary position. Active Recreation – requires one to expend body energy while performing these activities.

Recreation Is derived from the Latin word “ recreare” which means to be refreshed . Choices for recreation vary from person to person. What makes one happy may not be so for others. Therefore, recreational activities depend on one’s interests, pursuits, and needs which may be reflective of one’s beliefs and level of gratification.

Examples of Recreational Activities Indoor Recreational Activities Scrabble Table Tennis Chess Badminton Jump Rope Bowling Dancing Body Building Outdoor Recreational Activities Camping Hiking Swimming Bicycle Riding Snorkeling Fishing Picnic Skydiving

Indoor Recreation These are recreational activities that can be done or performed inside the room or inside the class. Such indoor activities requires less space, hence can be managed behind the door.

Out door Recreation These are activities that are done outside in the open and natural environment during leisure or free time. During this outing, participants are expected to be involved in varied activities and experience through which learners are expected to acquire skills, knowledge, enjoyment, satisfaction and qualities which will enhance their successful living.

- These are places found in cities or towns that give an opportunity to one to connect with nature. These can be parks, wildlife reserves, forests, or gardens. Green Spaces

Benefits of the Outdoors to our health HEALTH COMPONENT CONTRIBUTION TO HEALTH Physical Provides opportunities for informal sport and recreation for all skills and abilities. Mental Nature helps restore fatigue; provides solitude and quiet; provides venues for artistic inspiration and expression. Spiritual Provides a venue for contemplation and reflection and facilitates a feeling of connection with our surroundings. Social Helps expand our social network and strengthens our personal relationships. Environmental Provides clean and fresh air; fosters human involvement in the natural environment.

Things/Scenarios to Hunt: With a beautiful cow With a beautiful flower With a car With strangers With a tree Your own group pyramid Direction: The photo scavenger hunt is an outdoor activity where students must submit what is asked in picture form. Students will be taking a group photo with the given things or scenarios to look for.
