THE SIX ELEMENTS OF COMMUNICATION

SENDER “this represents the source , the speaker , or the person who creates , encodes , and transmits the message.” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

MESSAGE “this refers to the ideas , feelings , perceptions , values , beliefs , or opinions conveyed by the speaker to the receiver.” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

CHANNEL “this serves as the vehicle or medium used in transmitting messages or ideas .” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

WRITTEN MEDIA (anything written)

VERBAL MEDIA (anything spoken)

NON-VERBAL MEDIA (gestures, facial expressions, body positions, clothing, etc.)

NOISE / BARRIERS “this pertains to something that can distort the sending and receiving of messages .” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

PHYSICAL BARRIER – anything in the environment that makes it difficult to hear or listen. (e.g. environmental / background noise)

PSYCHOLOGICAL BARRIER – emotions, mood, knowledge, or other mechanisms within the speaker that impedes the speaker’s ability to express and to understand the message clearly.

SEMANTIC BARRIER – the ability of the receiver to understand the meaning of the words.

PSYCHOSOCIAL BARRIER – related to the receiver’s background, perception, values, biases, needs, and expectations.

RECEIVER “the individual or individuals to whom the message is directed .” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

FEEDBACK / RESPONSE “the key component in the communication process; allows the sender to evaluate and respond to the message.” (Hermosa, Hernandez, and Vergara, 2016)

AREAS THAT MAY AFFECT COMMUNICATION

SINCERITY – foundation of communication; honesty in every aspect

EMPATHY – the ability to put oneself into someone else’s shoes .

SELF-PERCEPTION – how we see ourselves

ROLE PERCEPTION – knowing a role in a certain situation.

LISTENING ABILITY – ability to listen attentively

DIRECTIONS: Please answer ACTIVITIES #1 and #2 which can be found on pages 14-15. Put your answers on a ½ sheet of yellow paper. Please be noted that instructions will be differentiated for each group.

ACTIVITY NUMBER 2: Situations What could be the appropriate feedback on the following situations? You saw a burglar in your neighbor’s house. While you were inside the jeep, you saw a pickpocket trying to slash the bag of a woman beside you While watching the television, you learn about the suspension of classes due to heavy rain. You were a manager of a food chain and you received a letter of complaint from your customer due to poor service.
