Take time to plan, pray, and have quiet
time every day, and encourage others
to do the same.
•Compare numbers up to 10,000 using relation symbols (>, <, =) and reflect on the
importance of organizing information to make informed decisions in daily life.
•Order 4- to 5-digit numbers in increasing or decreasing order while recognizing
how a well-structured approach, similar to organizing numbers, helps in daily
routines and planning activities.
•Demonstrate the ability to both compare and order numbers by planning a
sequence of activities (e.g., organizing daily tasks) and relate this process to
effective time management.
•Learning how to compare numbers helps us
understand which number is bigger or smaller.
•When comparing numbers, we use the terms:
"more than", "less than" and "equal to".
more than less than equal to
•Remember to look at and compare the
digits in the highest place value.
•If the digits in the same place values are
the same, compare the next digits.
The Greedy Gator is useful when learning how to compare
numbers. Because he's greedy, his mouth opens towards the
largest number!
The "more than" symbol
looks like a big gator's mouth
that likes to eat the larger
number, which is first in a
number sentence.
The "less than" symbol also
looks like a big gator's mouth
but it faces away from the
first smaller number and
opens towards the second,
larger number.
The "equal to" symbol looks
like the equals sign because
both sides of the number
sentence are exactly the
same size. The gator is
confused and so sits in the
water deciding what to do!
Because the Greedy Gator is facing the larger
number, which comes first, we use the more than
symbol.
The Greedy Gator is facing away from the first
number because it is smaller. Therefore, we use the
less than symbol..
Because both of these numbers are the same, the Greedy Gator
is confused and doesn't know which way to face! Here we use
the equal to symbol. We read this as: 20 is equal to two tens.
