Lesson 4: TEXT AND CONTEXT

What is CONTEXT? Environment Setting Surrounding of events Occurrences BACKGROUND

Understanding the text CONTEXT Getting out of the text itself Deeper understanding Appreciation of the text

PURPOSE A way to enable readers to understand the narrative or a literary piece MORE. Necessary in writing to PROVIDE information, new concepts, and words to develop thoughts.

Four Types of Literary Context

WRITERS CONTEXT

Do the lives of the authors influence their writings?

WRITERS CONTEXT this involves knowing about the writer’s life, values, assumptions, gender, race, sexual orientation, and the political and economic issues related to the author.

Basically, you are going to identify the different information's surrounding the writer and you have to link this information's to the text that he/she has written. And you are going to find out how the life of the writer affects his/her writing.

READER’S CONTEXT this involves the reader’s previous reading experience , values, assumptions, political and economic issues.

Basically these involves the previous literary texts that you’ve read and how you are going to relate it to the present text that you are currently read and at the same time you are going to attached your own experiences, your own feelings and emotions and how do this experiences relate to the text you are reading.

TEXT’S CONTEXT this involves the work’s publishing history. It is part of the larger text such as newspaper, history events, translated in it.

SOCIAL CONTEXT/SOCIO-CULTURAL CONTEXT These feature the society in which the characters live and in which the author’s text was produced .

LESSON’S GROUP ACTIVITY The class will be divided into three groups. Each group will listen to the songs that they pick. Identify the different contexts of the following OPM songs by answering the different questions in each context.

LESSON’S GROUP ACTIVITY Then explain in front of the class, how the text’s context affects the overall meaning and impact of the song.
