Understanding Typhoon

Understanding Typhoon

LEARNING OBJECTIVES LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the end of this lesson, the student should be able to: Explain how typhoon develops; Simulate the movements of winds around a center in a tropical cyclone; and Value the importance of thoroughly planning steps that will be taken in times of typhoon.

Activity DIY Tropical Cyclone Objective : Simulate the movements of winds around a center in a tropical cyclone

Materials : Two plastic bottles with caps Masking tape Drill or nail

Procedure: : 1. Place the two caps back to back. Wrap them with masking tape Wrap the tape around several times to make the connection strong and leak-proof. Drill a hole on both of them. If you do not have a drill, use a heated nail to make a hole. (see Figure 1)

Procedure: : 2. Fill one bottle with water. Next, screw one of the caps onto the bottle. Then screw the other bottle onto the other cap. (see Figure 2)

Procedure: : 3. Now, turn the whole set up so the filled bottled is on top. Shake the filled bottle with a circular motion (counter-clockwise) until a whirlpool is formed in the water. (see Figure 3)

Guide Questions Q1. What does each part of the model represent in relation to a tropical cyclone?

Guide Questions Q1. Based on the activity, how can you define epicenter and focus? Q2. What is the wind movement in the northern and southern hemisphere?

How can you define a typhoon? A typhoon is a giant, rotating storm that bring wind, rain and destruction.

What are the 3 terms for tropical storm?

1. Typhoon • Comes from and appears to be related in pronunciation from the Mandarin word, Tai Feng, which literally means “strong winds” or Arabic, Hindi. And Persian God of Winds name ‘Tufan’ 2. Hurricane • Came from Spanish word Huracan that means “storm”

Tropical depressions are found in Inter tropical convergence zone where north east and south east trade winds meet. ITCZ

How does a tropical cyclone form? The formation of a typhoon involves the following processes: 1. Evaporation of water at ocean surface temperatures of 26.5 degree Celsius 2. Convergence of air masses of different characteristics 3. High humidity 4. Warm air rises toward the cooler parts of the atmosphere; it cools off and the water vapor begins to form clouds

How do typhoons develop? 1. Typhoons start off as tropical thunderstorms. The strong winds pull in moisture from the oceans.

How do typhoons develop? 2. The thunderstorms convert the moisture into heat. The heat causes more air to flow to the center of the storm causing evaporation.

How do typhoons develop? 3. All the heat and air flow toward the eye creating the typhoon.

What are the categories of tropical cyclone? Category Maximum Wind Speed Kilometers per hour (kph) Tropical Depression 64 Tropical Storm 118 Typhoon 200 Super typhoon Greater than 200

What are the parts of a typhoon? EYE -The center. The calm part of the storm. 2. EYE WALL – The Part around the eye. It has the strongest winds and rains. Winds may blow 200 miles per hour. 3. INNER RAINBANDS – These are clouds that spin. 4. OUTER RAINBANDS – a concentrated region of heavy precipitation and hazardous weather within tropical cyclones

What government agency is responsible in monitoring movement of typhoon? Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (PAGASA)

Philippine Atmospheric Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration PAGASA is the Philippine national institution dedicated to provide flood and typhoon warmings, public weather forecast and advisories, meteorological, astronomical, climatological, and other specialized information and services primarily for the protection of life and property and in support of economic, productivity and sustainable development.

Let’s Recap What is a typhoon? What are two terms for a tropical cyclone? What government agency is responsible in monitoring movement of typhoon? What are the four parts of typhoon?

When a typhoon visits your place, it brings a lot of damage depending on its strength. As a student, what can you do to protect yourself and your family from this natural disaster?

Which agency takes charge of giving information about incoming typhoon? A. Department of Environment and Natural Resources B. Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology C. National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council D. Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration

2. Which tropical cyclone has a wind speed greater than 200 kph? A. Super typhoon B. Typhoon C. Tropical storm D. Tropical depression

3. Where do typhoons that hit the Philippines mostly originate? A. Indian Ocean B. Pacific Ocean C. South China Sea D. West Philippine Sea

4. What is the other term for tropical cyclone? A. Earthquake B. Tsunami C. Typhoon D. Wildfire

5. Where do typhoons form? A. Lakes B. Oceans C. Rivers D. Streams

Assignment Draw me out! Directions: Draw on a long bond paper about the proper measures to mitigate or lessen the effects of typhoon in a community.
