PARAGRAPH Paragraph???? Definition A  paragraph   is a self-contained unit of a discourse in  writing  dealing with a particular point or  idea . A paragraph consists of one or more  sentences . Though not required by the syntax of any language, paragraphs are usually an expected part of formal writing, used to organize longer  prose .

PARAGRAPH Structure * Generally includes 3 parts + T opic sentence (always) + Supporting sentences (always) + Concluding sentence (usually)

THE TOPIC SENTENCE Every paragraph has a topic sentence, which: + is a complete idea. + contains 2 parts: a topic and a controlling idea. + is the most general statement.

THE TOPIC SENTENCE Position Usually at the beginning of the paragraph (best) Maybe, at other locations (possible) Sometimes at the end of the paragraph

THE TOPIC SENTENCE Two parts of a topic sentence 1. The topic names the subject of the paragraph. 2. The controlling idea limits or controls the topic to a specific area. Watch the video for more details Practice 5

SUPPORTING SENTENCES Function - Explain or prove the topic sentence. Must be thorough and convincing. Mustn’t support with inadequate ideas/details. Kinds of supporting details Opinions vs facts ( p.12 ) Examples as support ( p.13 ) Supporting your writing with examples and evidence

CONCLUDING SENTENCE Function Signal the end of the paragraph Remind the readers of important ideas Notes Not always compulsory (especially for short paragraphs) Never introduce a new idea in concluding sentence Practice 9
