BIBLE READING IN CLASS 5

BIBLE READING IN CLASS Luke 4.1-4, 16-20 Luke 4 1 - And Jesus, full of the Holy Ghost, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit into the wilderness. 2-And for forty days he was tempted by the devil, and in those days he ate nothing, and when they were over he was hungry. 3 - And the devil said to him: If you are the Son of God, tell this stone to become bread. 4 - And Jesus answered him, saying, It is written, that man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word of God. 6

Luke 4.16-20 16-And when he arrived at Nazareth, where he had been brought up, he entered the synagogue on the Sabbath day, according to his custom, and stood up to read. 17 - And the book of the prophet Isaiah was given to him; and, when he opened the book, he found the place where it was written: 18-The Spirit of the Lord is upon me, because he has anointed me to preach the gospel to the poor, he has sent me to heal the brokenhearted, 19 - proclaiming liberty to the captives, giving sight to the blind, setting the oppressed free, proclaiming the acceptable year of the Lord. 20-And, closing the book and giving it back to the minister, he sat down; and the eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fixed on him. 7

INTRODUCTION In the previous lesson, we studied three opponents who appear as obstacles to our journey: the Devil, the Flesh and the World. In this lesson, we will emphasize three weapons, that is, spiritual resources that every believer needs to use when faced with obstacles on the journey: the Word of God, Prayer and Fasting. From the beginning of our walk with Christ, we are facing a spiritual battle that will only end with the Rapture of the Church to heaven. 8

Keyword : Weapons 9

10 I – THE WEAPONS OF THE BELIEVER

I – THE WEAPONS OF THE BELIEVER 1. The weapons. In general, we can classify weapons as instruments of attack and defense. In the Scriptures, the main instruments of attack are: sword (1 Sam 17.45); rod (Ps 23:4); sling (1 Sam 17:40); bow and arrow (2 Rs 13.15); spear (Joshua 8:18); and javelin (2 Sam 18:14). Those for defense are: shield ( Eph 6.16), helmet (1 Sam 17.5), breastplate (1 Sam 17.5) and shin guards (1 Sam 17.6). These weapons were used by ancient armies, as well as by the army of Israel, with the difference that it was urged to place its trust in the Lord (Ps 20:7). However, for Christians, “weapons” here have a metaphorical meaning, as our combat is not hand to hand with another person, but against the evil headed by the Devil and his demons, who make use of the World and the Flesh. 11

2. The Enemy’s strategies. We cannot despise the knowledge about the strength of the Enemy of our souls. The New Testament reveals what the Devil is capable of doing to deceive people: stealing the good Word from the heart (Mt 13.19); seek high positions with lies (Acts 5.3); using people to betray (Luke 22:3,4); enslave (2 Tim 2:26); weaken the believer’s faith (Luke 22:32); deceive with demonic doctrines (1 Tim 4.1). Not by chance, the apostle Peter warned us about the Enemy's sagacity: “Be sober, be vigilant, because your adversary the devil walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he can devour” (1 Peter 5:8). 12

3. The head of all evil forces. The apostle Paul clearly writes that the Devil is the head of all the powers of darkness that battle against us ( Eph 6:11; Rom 13:12). Even the apostle of the Gentiles was sometimes hindered by the Enemy through human instruments (1 Thess. 2:18). This is one of the reasons that the apostle coins Satan as the “prince of the power of the air” ( Eph 2:2). Further highlighting his strength and authority in the hierarchy of evil, the Devil is called “the god of this age” (2 Cor 4.4). Therefore, we cannot ignore that the Enemy has an organized kingdom with his servants, emissaries, principalities and powers (Luke 11:17-22). 13

The believer's weapons must be used against the strategies of the Enemy, the chief of all evil forces. SYNOPSIS I 14

15 II – THE THREE SPIRITUAL WEAPONS OF THE CHRISTIAN

16 II – THE THREE SPIRITUAL WEAPONS OF THE CHRISTIAN 1. The Word of God. The Lord Jesus said that we do not live on bread alone, but on the entire Word of God (Mt 4.4). In this way, the apostle Peter advises that we “fondly desire” the “rational milk” for the development of our salvation, that is, the persevering study of the Word of God for our spiritual growth (1 Peter 2:2). Once nourished and solidified with the Word, we are firm in God to resist evil influences, Satan's traps and other strategies (Mt 7.24,25). Therefore, whoever surrenders to the Word of God experiences the fruitful influence of divine truth (John 17:17).

17 2. Prayer. Combined with the study of the Word, prayer is one of the most important spiritual weapons that believers have throughout their journey to Heaven (Ps 55:17). Let us pay attention to the following statement: “praying at all times with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit” ( Eph 6:18). Note that the apostle Paul does not insert prayer as a piece of armor, because in fact, it is as if it brought an adjustment or alignment to the entire armor. In this aspect, this image brings the idea that prayer strengthens all spheres of our life.

18 3. Fasting. Allied to the Word of God and prayer, the practice of fasting is a third spiritual weapon for the believer during the journey to Heaven. In both the Old and New Testaments, fasting is a present practice. This act is used in the context of seeking divine guidance (Ex 34.28; Dt 9.9; 2 Sam 12.16-23). In the New Testament, the Lord Jesus fasted (Mt 4.1-4) and said that his disciples would do so too (Mt 9.14-17; Lk 5.33-39). The Early Church observed the practice of fasting, seeking divine guidance for sending workers (Acts 13.2,3; 14.23). The apostle Paul also fasted during his ministry (2 Cor 6.5; 11.27). Therefore, fasting has a glorious value for the life of the believer, as it is an act that helps us to have more intimacy with God.

The three spiritual weapons that the Christian has at his disposal are the Word of God, Fasting and Prayer. SYNOPSIS II 19

20 III – JESUS CHRIST: OUR GREATEST MODEL

21 III – JESUS CHRIST: OUR GREATEST MODEL 1. Overcoming the Devil with the Word. There are two important episodes that report the special emphasis that the Lord Jesus gave to the Word in Luke 4. The first emphasizes that the Lord Jesus overcame the Tempter with the Word of God (Luke 4.4; cf. Dt 8.3). In the second, He read a passage from the prophet Isaiah in the synagogue in Nazareth and took upon himself the fulfillment of the text read (Luke 4.16-20; cf. Is 61.1,2). Our Lord made it clear in these episodes that the principles of the Word of God must be present in our lives in the battle against the Evil One. Therefore, in this dispute, the apostle Paul advises us to take the sword of the Spirit, that is, the Word of God, the only weapon of attack in the believer's armor ( Eph 6.17), a powerful and effective weapon that comes from the Spirit Holy One of God (2 Tim 3:16).

22 2. Living in prayer. The evangelist Luke shows that Jesus withdrew to deserted places to pray (Luke 5.16; 6.12; 9.28). He prayed for the apostles and the Church (John 17.9,20-22), for his executioners (Luke 23.34), for Simon (Luke 22.31,32), for those who were at the tomb of Lazarus (John 11.41,42). He knew well the value of prayer and, therefore, spent a lot of time talking to God. In this sense, our Lord counts on us to dedicate ourselves to the practice of prayer, selecting a reserved place, time and priority to seek God in supplications (Mt 6.6).

23 3. Living fasting. In addition to meditating on the Word and persevering in prayer, the Lord Jesus fasted (Luke 4:2). Now, He also expects us to imitate Him by fasting. Unfortunately, there are those who teach that we don't need to fast. Except for those who have health problems, which is why it is very important to be under medical guidance, every follower of Christ is encouraged by the Bible to fast. Furthermore, when we combine the study of the Word and prayer with fasting, we deepen our intimacy with God and become more sensitive to his voice, as happened with the leadership and members of the ancient church who fasted like the Lord Jesus (Acts 9:9; 13.2,3).

“Our Lord counts on us to dedicate ourselves to the practice of prayer, selecting a reserved place, time and priority to seek God in supplication.” 24

Jesus Christ is our greatest model of someone who used these three spiritual weapons: the Word of God, Fasting and Prayer. SYNOPSIS III 25

26 CONCLUSION Our Enemy is cunning and wicked. Therefore, we cannot ignore his strategies. Against him, we will fight with spiritual weapons: Word, Prayer and Fasting. These weapons promote growth and empowerment for our lives throughout our spiritual journey. Thus, according to the life model of our Lord Jesus, who made use of these weapons, we can overcome the Evil One's strategies.

1. According to the lesson, what meaning should we consider the word “weapon”? The metaphorical sense, as our combat is not hand to hand with another person, but against the evil headed by the Devil and his demons, who make use of the World and the Flesh. 2. Name at least three strategies the Enemy uses to deceive people. Snatch the good Word from the heart (Mt 13.19); seek high positions with lies (Acts 5.3); using people to betray (Luke 22:3,4). 3. Name the believer’s three spiritual weapons. Word of God, Fasting and Prayer. Reviewing the content 27

4. What happens when we combine study of the Word, Prayer and Fasting? When we combine the study of the Word and prayer with fasting, we deepen our intimacy with God and become more sensitive to his voice. 5. What do the Word of God, Fasting and Prayer promote in our spiritual journey? The Word of God, Prayer and Fasting promote growth and strengthening in our lives throughout our spiritual journey. 28
