Choose 4 volunteers (2 students per game) The students will solve Math problem The first student will solve the problem without using calculator The second student will solve the problem using a calculator Observe who will respond quickly with the right answer. 1 ACTIVITY:
VARIABLES IN AN EXPIREMENT
VARIABLE any factor that may change in the course of an investigation. Experimenting entails the exploration of likely connections between variables. Recognizing and working with variables is a process skill in science. It enables you to conduct experiments logically and systematically. The better you identify the variables, the more reliable the conclusion becomes. 3

INDEPENDENT VARIABLE is one that is intentionally changed in an experiment. It is the variable that is manipulated.
DEPENDENT VARIABLE one that may respond as the independent variable changes. It is also known as the respondent variable.
7 CONSTANT VARIABLE the variables that are expected to affect the results but are prevented from doing so Constant variables are kept the same by the investigator throughout the experiment. It is done to ensure accuracy of the outcomes of an experiment.

Let us find out! A student wanted to test how the mass of a paper airplane affected the distance it would fly. Paper clips were added before each test flight. As each paper clip was added, the plane was tested to determine how far it would fly. 24
Independent Variable: Mass of plane Dependent Variable: Distance plane flies Constant: Type of paper, how it was thrown 26
Let us find out! Two groups of students were tested to compare their speed working math problems. Each group was given the same problems. One group used calculators and the other group computed without calculators. 27
