BIBLE READING IN CLASS Matthew 4.1-11 5
BIBLE READING IN CLASS Matthew 4.1-11 1 - Then Jesus was led by the Spirit into the desert to be tempted by the devil. 2 - And after fasting forty days and forty nights, afterward he was hungry; 3 - And when the tempter came to him, he said: If thou be the Son of God, command that these stones become bread. 4 - But he answered and said, It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceedeth out of the mouth of God. 5 - Then the devil took him to the Holy City, and placed him on the pinnacle of the temple, 6
6 - and said to him: If you are the Son of God, throw yourself down from here; for it is written: He will command his angels concerning you, and they will take you in their hands, so that you will never strike your foot against a stone. 7 - Jesus said to him: It is also written: You shall not put the Lord your God to the test. 8 - Again, the devil took him to a very high mountain; and showed him all the kingdoms of the world and their glory. 9 - And he said to him: All these I will give you if you fall down and worship me. 10 - Then Jesus said to him: Go away, Satan, for it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and him only you shall serve. 11 - Then the devil left him; and, behold, the angels arrived and served him. 7
INTRODUCTION Temptation is something that the believer will face throughout his journey. Not by chance, the Lord Jesus taught us to pray so that God would not allow us to fall into temptation (Mt 6.13 - NVT). Therefore, in this lesson, we will study the biblical concept of temptation, the way our Lord faced it in the desert and how we should resist it. We will see that it is imperative to follow Jesus Christ's recommendation regarding watching and praying so as not to give in to temptation along the way (Mt 26.41). 8

10 I – TEMPTATION AND ITS HUMAN SPHERE
I – TEMPTATION AND ITS HUMAN SPHERE 1. Biblical concept of temptation. In the Bible, three words appear to define “temptation”. The first is the Hebrew word massah , which means “test”, “ordeal” (Dt 4.34; 9.22; Ps 95.8). The second and third are Greek words respectively: peirasmós , “test”, “proof”, appearing 25 times in the New Testament (Acts 20.19; 1 Co 10.13; James 1.2,12); and the verb peirázō , to test, to submit to the test (Jo 6.6; Gal 6.1; Ap 2.2,10), occurring approximately 36 times in the New Testament. Thus, we can say that temptation is an experiment, test or test in the face of an attraction to do evil in order to obtain pleasure or profit. 11
2. Two ways of temptation. According to the Word of God, temptation can come primarily from the Devil (Gen 3) and also from within the human being (James 1.14,15). It originates from the Devil when his objective, similar to what happened with Jesus, is to divert us from the route of our mission and life purpose established by God. The one that is born from within the human being has to do with the vices of the soul when, instead of giving priority to the fruit of the Spirit, we give ourselves over to the attraction, deception and delight of the lust of the flesh. Both paths of temptation occur in the human sphere. 12
3. Temptation: a human phenomenon. In the Epistle of James it is written: “Let no one say when he is tempted, I am tempted by God; for God cannot be tempted by evil and tempts no one” (James 1:13). It is true that there is a trial that comes from God to perfect the believer's character (James 1:2,4; Matthew 5:48; 1 Peter 1:7). However, a test that incites evil does not come from God, that is, actions that demonstrate a life dominated by carnal passions are entirely human responsibility (Mt 5.28; Rm 8.6). Even though the Enemy can persuade us to fall into temptation, this occurs in the human and earthly sphere (1 Cor 10:13). 13
Temptation is a phenomenon that occurs in the sphere of human nature. SYNOPSIS I 14
15 II – THE LORD JESUS AND THE TEMPTATION
16 II – THE LORD JESUS AND THE TEMPTATION 1. The testing of the Lord Jesus. According to the Gospel of Matthew, after Jesus' baptism, the Holy Ghost led him into the desert (cf. Mc 1.12,13; Luke 4.1,2). It was 40 days of being tempted by Satan, an intense spiritual battle against the Adversary, the “prince of this world” (John 16.11; cf. Eph 2.2). Satan's objective was to make Jesus deviate from his purpose, satisfying desires and needs, contrary to God's will (cf. John 4:34). Therefore, there was an intense attack from the Evil One against our Lord, who resisted wisely through prayer, fasting and the Word. Although physically fragile, the Lord Jesus was spiritually strong.
17 2. The areas in which Jesus was tempted. We can say that Jesus Christ was tempted in three areas: the physical area, the divine nature and the spiritual area. In the physical area, the Devil tempted him by asking him to turn stones into bread, after feeling hungry due to the fasting process, as this would reveal that He was the Son of God (Mt 4.3). In the area of divine nature, the Devil tempts Jesus by asking Him to throw himself from the pinnacle of the Temple, as the angels would guard Him (Mt 4.5,6). In the spiritual area, the Devil tempts our Lord, challenging him to avoid the path of the cross to establish a kingdom by his strength, which would be readily accepted by the Jews; but only one thing was necessary: Jesus must worship the Devil (Mt 4.9). Thus, we can say that our Lord was tempted in the physical area, with human needs; in his divine nature, with the idea of displaying his divine attributes to the public; and in the spiritual area, in the sense of idolizing another being.
18 3. How did Jesus overcome temptation? Our Lord defeated the Devil with the Word of God. In every area of temptation, He responded, “It is written.” In the first temptation, He said: “It is written: Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God” (Mt 4:4). In the second temptation, He said: It is written: “You shall not tempt the Lord your God” (Mt 4:7). In the third temptation, He said: “Go away, Satan, for it is written: You shall worship the Lord your God, and Him only you shall serve” (Mt 4:10). In this spiritual battle against the Devil, our Lord always appealed to the exposition of the Word of God. This means that He viewed the Scriptures as the supreme authority for faith and practice. Thus, alongside prayer and fasting, as we have already studied, we must overcome the Enemy and his tempting devices with the Word of God ( Eph 6.11,17). Let us imitate our divine Master!

III – RESISTING TEMPTATION 20
21 III – RESISTING TEMPTATION 1. We are all tempted. No matter how much we observe the disciplines of prayer, fasting and reading the Word, the Enemy will not stop tempting us. For this reason, we have to be aware of this, since we live in a post-modern culture that, through its artists, writers, philosophers and even “theologians”, attempt to naturalize relativism, seeking to mold us according to their customs. worldly. In view of this, we are encouraged by the Scriptures to assume the posture of Christ and not conform to this world (Rm 12.2).
22 2. Reject the temptation! There is a famous phrase by the reformer Martin Luther: “You cannot stop birds from flying over your head, but you can stop them from taking up their nests!” Although it is not a Bible verse, the phrase reveals a truth that we find in the Word of God. We can see it in Joseph's flight from Potiphar's wife (Gen 39:12); in Job's attitude of fleeing from evil (Job 1:1). Thus, we cannot prevent temptation from appearing, but, with the strength of the Holy Ghost, we can prevent it from dominating us. Therefore, we need to follow what the apostle Paul wrote to Timothy: “Flee from everything that stimulates the passions of youth” (2 Tim 2:22 – NVT). Therefore, throughout our journey, the best strategy is to avoid temptation.
23 3. Repent! In the middle of our journey, it is possible for the believer to give in to temptation and, therefore, break communion with God. However, it is possible to reestablish a relationship with Him through confession of sins, repentance and spiritual brokenness. There is a path of healing and restoration for those who act in this way ( Pv 28.13). For this reason, if we give in to temptation, let us not try to justify ourselves, blame others or ignore sinful acts. The divine path is that of confession and repentance to enjoy forgiveness.
We are encouraged to assume the posture of Christ and not conform to this world. SYNOPSIS III 24
25 CONCLUSION Similar to the Lord, who was tempted in every way, but did not sin ( Heb 2.18; 4.15); we can follow the path of not being seduced by temptation. Thus, we can enjoy more of a life in holiness and communion with God. Therefore, by offering resistance to temptation throughout the journey, we will achieve success and receive the crown of life (James 1:12).
