Lesson Manufactured Boards ONLINE LESSONS

In creole sometimes we use the term wood to describe pure wood and manufactured boards. Manufactured boards are man made materials . Instead of throwing away waste wood, they are used to create a new category of materials which are called manufactured boards. Examples of manufactured boards: Plywood, Medium density fibreboard , Blockboard , Chipboard.

Plywood Construction method. Plywood is made from wood veneers glued together. An odd number of veneers are used. Glue applied between an odd number of veneers. Then pressure applied to the veneers. The glue is allowed to set.

Construction method. (A veneer is a thin sheet of material. It can be made from wood or plastic)

Examples of plywood.

Advantages of plywood. Plywood is a strong material It is available in different thickness It is a cheap compared to pure wood Disadvantages of plywood. Plywood splint with time. It is not resistant to water unless protected. The edges must be hidden

Blockboard Construction method. Strips of softwood are glued between two layers of veneers. The material looks like a “sandwich”

Construction method

Blockboard

Advantages of blockboard . Blockboard is cheaper than pure wood It has a good strength. It is light Disadvantages of blockboard . It is not hard Prone to insect attack Can be difficult to work

Chipboard Also (called particleboard) Construction method. Chipboard is made from wood chips. The wood chips are mixed with resin (glue) the mixture is pressed under heat a p ressure.

Construction method.

Examples of chipboard.

Advantages of chipboard. It does not have defects Can be used for sound insulation. It is cheaper than wood Disadvantages of chipboard. It is not a strong material. Difficult to make wood joints When discarded can be harmful to the environment

Medium density fibreboard M.D.F is made by mixing wood fibres with resin. The mixture is pressed under heat and pressure to form a sheet

Advantages of MDF. It is cheaper than pure wood. It has a smooth surface Available in large sheets Disadvantages of chipboard. It is easily damaged by water. Generates dust when working. Not strong material

Important for exams. Complete table below. Keep the table.
