Battle of Surabaya The Battle of Surabaya was fought between pro-independence Indonesian soldiers and militia against British and British Indian troops as a part of the Indonesian National Revolution.

The climax of the battle was in November 1945. The battle is the toughest battle in Indonesian history. The war started on 30 October after the British commander, Brigadier A. W. S. Mallaby was killed. Although the Colonial forces had control over the city in three days, the poorly armed Indonesian troops and civilians fought for three weeks. The battle of Surabaya gained international attention. The Dutch then realized that Indonesians had much support from other countries. The heroic act by arek-arek Suroboyo helped the Indonesians gain independence. 10 November is celebrated annually as Heroes’ Day.
