Life processes II Week 6 Lesson 2 Grade 6 Science MRS GR EN LIVING VS DEAD VS NON-LIVING

Lesson objectives Continue with M.R.S.G.R . E.N E xcretion and N utrition covered in this lesson Be able to identify things that are living, dead or have never lived

Excretion All organisms produce wastes that need to be removed. If waste products stay inside an organism, they can become toxic. Normal functions in cells and tissues of organisms produce waste such as urine, carbon dioxide and dead cells. Excretion is the removal of metabolic waste products from the living organism Breathing out carbon dioxide (waste gas) Sweating removes urea from our body Removal of urine from our bodies also removes toxic urea and other metabolic wastes Bowel movement is technically not excretion, but elimination of undigested food. It is important to get rid of undigested food from our body or it will pile up!

Nutrition For organisms to survive, they require food for energy and nutrients (growth, survival and reproduction) Many living things acquire nutrients and food from eating other animals or plants Plants acquire nutrients (e.g. mineral salts) and water from soil and carbon dioxide from air to make their own food (photosynthesis).

Activity 1: Read the following passage Nayeem woke up early on Saturday morning with a black bird pecking at his window . He jumped out of bed, put on his cotton jumper and ran downstairs. His mum was in the kitchen making breakfast on their new gas cooker. Nayeem had a large bowl of cornflakes with lots of milk . As he was hungry he decided to have some toast and honey before his mum gave him two boiled eggs . It was a beautiful day outside so Nayeem decided to go into the garden and water his sunflowers . As he filled up his metal watering can he saw a big fat slug crawling through the soil . “ Aghh ” he screamed and ran back into the kitchen. Sort the highlighted words in the above passage as: Living Once alive Non living

Activity 2: One plant is living, one plant is fake. Spot the fake! Plant A Plant B How do you spot the fake and find out which plant is living?! Use your knowledge of photosynthesis and life processes to suggest as many different ways as possible to help you investigate which is the fake plant. Hint: Use M.R.S.G.R.E.N to help you out!

Life process Experiment What would you observe if the plant is living? What would you observe if the ‘plant’ is non-living? Sensitivity Shine a light source at the plants from one direction. Overtime the plant will grow towards the light. The plant will not respond to the stimulus (light). Growth? What would you do to test for growth? Respiration? What would you do to test for respiration? Hint: respiration process will produce heat energy Can you come up with a hypothesis for this given example?
