Kinds of Poetry

Your Goals: In this lesson, you will learn: how poetry comes in various forms; how poetry comes in various styles;and how Filipino and foreign poets construct poems

Common Poetry Types

Sonnet A sonnet is a 14 line poem that expresses a single theme or idea wherein the first eight lines pose a question or dilemma that is resolved in the final six lines. The term for the 8 lines is called the octave while the six lines is called the sestet.

Petrarchan Sonnet This Italian sonnet form is named after is named after its creator, Francesco Petrarca who is now commonly known as Petrarch. The 14-line poem often has two distinct parts; the octave carries the rhyme scheme of ABBAABBA while the sestet carries the rhyme scheme of CDECDE or sometimes CDCDCD.

Shakesperean Sonnet This English sonnet form is named after poet and playwright William Shakespeare, who lived two centuries after Petrarch.

Haiku It is a Japanese form of poetry that consists of three lines, with the first line composed of five syllables, the second with seven syllables, and the third line with five syllabus.

Ode An ode is an extended lyric poem characterized by exalted emotion and dignified style which usually carries a single serious theme.

Limerick The limerick is a light and funny kind of poem that sounds nonsensical in meaning.

Epic An epic is a long narrative poem in dignified style about the deeds of a traditional or historical hero featuring formal narrative elements.
