MAKE CONNECTIONS BETWEEN TEXTS TO PARTICULAR SOCIAL ISSUES, CONCERNS, OR DISPOSITIONS IN REAL LIFE 2 nd Grading – Lesson 1

Unlocking of Unfamiliar Words 1.Text Refers to a written or printed work, such as book, article, or essay, that conveys meaning and information. It can also refer to the words or language used in a particular context. 2.Connection/s Refer to the relationships or links between ideas, concepts, or texts. It can also refer to the personal or emotional links that readers make with a text, such as text- to- self, text-to- text, or text- to- world connections.

3.Disposotion Is a person's attitude, mindset, or tendency to approach learning, problems, or situations in a particular way. It can also refer to a person's natural abilities or talents. 4.Social problem An issue or challenge that affects a significant number of people in the society, such as poverty, inequality, or discrimination. Social problems are often complex and multifaceted, requiring critical thinking and analysis to understand and address.

Making connections between texts and real- life issues, concerns, or disposition is essential not only for our academic journey but also a way to contribute to our society. Our goal for today is to make connections but at the same time to foster both academic and social responsibility.

It is any condition or behavior that has negative consequences for large numbers of people and that is generally recognized as a condition or behavior that needs to be addressed. It can also be defined as a phenomenon that influences many citizens within the society in different ways. SOCIAL PROBLEM OR ISSUE

It is the process of linking what the students read, to what they already know. This strategy helps students comprehend text, by activating their prior knowledge and making meaning of what they read. MAKING CONNECTION

Three Ways in Making Connections

Keene and Zimmerman (1997) concluded that you comprehend better when you make different kinds of connections:

Answers the questions that aim to know the connection of the texts you’ve read to your personal life. For example: What does this remind me of in my life? How is this different from my life? How does this relate to my life? a. Text to Self

A nswers the questions that aim to know the connection between the previous texts you’ve read to the present one. For example: What does this remind me of in another book I've read? How is this text similar/ different to other things I've read? Have I read about something like this before? b. Text to Text

A nswers the questions that aim to know the connection of the texts you’ve read to the real world. For example: What does this remind me of in the real world? How is this book similar/ different to things that happen in the real world? How did that part relate to the world around me? c. Text to World

Instructions: Gather at the back of the class. I will show a statement on the screen. You will choose whether the statement is a Text-to-Self Connections, Text-to-Text Connections, or Text-to-World Connections.  Form a line to your chosen answer. You will only have 5 seconds to answer each item.

What are some  social issues  that affect young people today? How do the issues impact their lives?   2. Why is it important to address the social issue/ concern/disposition presented in the texts?   3. Choose a current social issue ( e.g., bullying, climate change, social media addiction). What are its  causes and effects?   4. How can you apply the insights gained from texts to real- life situations or personal experiences?  

SLOGAN MAKING The teacher will divide the class into 3 groups. Each group will create a slogan that will relate to the given poem entitled “The Kid in The Back of the Class”. The group will first identify what issue is being presented on the poem. The groups will only have 10 minutes to create their output and 1 minute to present on how that issue they think will be solved. Their output will be graded base on the given rubrics.    

Rubrics for Slogan Making   CRITERIA 10 points 8 points 5 points Clarity The slogan is straightforward and easily understood, conveying a clear message. The slogan is somewhat clear but may be open to interpretation. The slogan is unclear and difficult to understand. Relevance to Theme or Purpose The slogan is highly relevant to the theme or purpose, effectively conveying the intended message. The slogan is somewhat connected to the theme but lacks strong relevance. The slogan is unrelated to the intended theme or purpose. Creativity The slogan is creative, original, and stands out, capturing attention effectively. The slogan shows some creativity but includes common or overused phrases. The slogan lacks creativity and is generic or unoriginal. Conciseness The slogan is concise, memorable, and effectively conveys the message with brevity. The slogan is somewhat concise but could be shortened for greater impact. The slogan is overly long, making it difficult to remember. Originality The slogan is highly original, setting it apart from commonly used phrases and slogans. The slogan shows some originality but may borrow from existing slogans. The slogan is unoriginal, resembling commonly used phrases or clichés.

As we explore these texts, let's think about : What social issues or concerns are highlighted in the texts, and how can we apply what we've learned to our own lives and communities?

1. An example of this connection is the teleserye Maria Clara at Ibarra to the novel Noli Me Tangere. 2. You feel like you can relate yourself to Cinderella because you are an orphan. 3. Upon watching Batang Quiapo , you realized that the killings also happen around you. 4. The novel A Christmas Carol reminds me of my uncle and his attitude. EVALUATION Direction : Identify the text connection used in each statement. On a 1/4 sheet of paper, answer the following questions carefully.

5. The story that we have read today has the same genre and plot last year only different in title. 6. I feel like Pride and Prejudice of Jane Austen is the same with the book Sense and Sensibility. 7. The movie Cruella has the theme revenge that also happens in someone’s life. 8. When you were a child, you feel like you are a Disney Princess because you can get everything you wanted. 9. Everything that happens on the movie The Hunger Games is based on the novel of the same name. 10. The TV series How to Get Away with Murder depicts the real-life scenario happening in the society.

Using google, search for the following: (5 titles minimum, 8 maximum) 1. Books that relate to real-world phenomena 2. Books that can relate to real-life experiences. 3. Books that have similar plot / story / genre. I-SEARCH MO!

13. The Pit and the Pendulum and The Cask of Amontillado are both scary stories because it is written by Edgar Allan Poe. 14. The story The Lottery depicts what people are doing blindly just to follow the society. 15. Your aunt’s favorite teleserye is Linlang because it’s like her life where your uncle cheated on her.
