LEVEL OF PROFICIENCY IN SOLVING WORD PROBLEMS INVOLVING SEQUENCES OF STUDENTS IN GRADE 10 AT MARCIAL O. RANOLA MEMORIAL SCHOOL. MARIELA A. CAMBA MAED MAJOR IN MATHEMATICS UNIVERSITY OF SAINT ANTHONY
BACKGROUND OF THE STUDY Problem-solving competency is a crucial aspect of mathematics education, enabling students to solve problems effectively and participate in society. Teachers use various strategies to develop students' problem-solving abilities, which are dynamic processes that involve understanding, planning, selecting methods, and applying heuristics. Non-routine problems require creative and critical thinking, often lacking a straightforward solution. To enhance students' problem-solving skills, teachers should expose them to real-world problems, allowing them to apply mathematical knowledge to real-world situations. This approach follows the National Council for Teaching Mathematics (NCTM) principles of learning and assessment, building on existing knowledge and applying it to new, applicable problems. Non-routine problems are considered more complicated and difficult than routine problems, but there is limited information on the challenges and obstacles students face when solving real-world problems. This study explores the strategies employed by grade 10 students in solving non-routine problems in mathematics, aiming to design a new curriculum adaptive to students' competence in solving problems in real-world contexts.
FELT NEED IN THE STUDY All the studies dealt with the suggested partial solutions to the students need in lifelong learning as needed by the curriculum and promote active involvement of the teachers and students. The present study does not only focus on the level of proficiency in solving real world problems in mathematics rather it focuses on the effectiveness of such strategies and programs in intervening least mastered skills among students. Furthermore, there is a study related to this but did not propose a program and strategy to enhance the proficiency of the students. Hence, the present study is not a duplication of developed and published or unpublished materials based on the review studies. The researcher has strong urge and open to tackle similar study/research because it is what is needed by the students in current setting.
THEORETICAL PARADIGM
STATEMENT OF THE PROBLEM This study was conducted to describe the student’s level of proficiency and the process used in solving real-world problems. The main objectives of the study are as follows: What is the Profile of the respondents in terms of: Age Sex 2. What is the Level Of Proficiency In Solving Word Problems Involving Sequences Of Students In Grade 10 At Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School along with? a. problem representation. b. problem solution, and. c. answer verification. 3. Is there a significant relationship between the profile of the respondents and the Level of Proficiency in Solving Real World Problems in Mathematics 10 students at Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School? 4. What are the difficulties encountered by the students in solving real-world problems? 5.What Measures can be proposed based on the findings of the study?
METHODOLOGY Research Design The researchers employed qualitative techniques in describing the process used by the students in the problem solving. The “noting details” was also used. The written solution to each problem in the worksheets was identified and analyzed. The transcripts of the interview conducted to the students were also included in describing the heuristics of the students in the entire problem-solving process. Respondents of The Study The participants of this study consisted of 51 10th grade students attending Marcial O. Ranola Memorial School, first semester of the 2023-2024 school year. Purposive sampling was used by the researcher in 51 students from this school.
presentation title Data Gathering Tools The data used in the study were obtained using two instruments, real world problem worksheets, and interview guide. Statistical Treatment of the Data The researcher user’s different statistical tools that are suited for the study to analyze the data collected. The respondent was classified and tabulated systematically according to the different set ups included in the study. All the data gathered were presented quantitatively. The numerical findings of the study will be statistically analyzed and interpreted. The researcher used the Percentage Technique, Weighted Mean.
