LEVELS OF
TEACHING FEATURES, MERITS, DEMERITS

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

INTRODUCTION

●Teaching is a process of completing various tasks in the classroom
which has a goal to motivate the students to learn.

●Teacher can make his teaching powerful by the effective use of
resources if teaching goals are very clear.

●Teaching approach may lead the same content to a thoughtful
situation from a thoughtless situation.

●The whole teaching process can be divided into three levels :
1.Memory level
2.Understanding level
3.Reflective level

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

MEMORY LEVEL TEACHING (MLT)

●First and thoughtless level of teaching.

●Concerned with memory or mental ability.

●It is considered to be the lowest level of teaching.

●The thinking ability does not play any role.

●Students only cram facts, information, formulas and laws that are
taught to them.

●Teaching is nothing but learning the subject matter by rote.

●Role of a teacher is prominent.

●Study material is organised and pre-planned and presented in
sequential order.

MERITS
●Useful for children at lower classes.

●Teacher is free to make choices of subject matter, plan it and can
present it at will.

●Knowledge acquired at memory level teaching forms a basis for the
future.

●Acts as the first step for understanding and reflective level.

●It is a prerequisite for understanding level teaching.

DEMERITS
●Does not contribute to the development of the student’s
capabilities.

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

●Knowledge gained does not prove helpful in real life situations as it
does not develop the talents of students.

●Pupils are kept in strict discipline and cramming is insisted.

●Intelligence does not carry any importance.

●Lacks motivation.

UNDERSTANDING LEVEL TEACHING (ULT)

●Understanding something is to perceive the meaning, grasp the idea
and comprehend the meaning.

●The teaching at the understanding level is of a higher quality than
the one at the memory level.

●It is more useful and thoughtful from the point of view of mental
capabilities.

●The teacher explains the student about the relationship between
principles and facts and teaches them how these principles can be
applied.

●Memory level teaching barrier is essential to be crossed for this
level of teaching.

●This enables students to have complete command over subject
material.

●The role of the teacher is more active.

●No cramming is encouraged at this level.

●The new knowledge acquired at this level is related to the earlier
knowledge gained.

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

MERITS
●Students make use of their thinking abilities.

●Knowledge acquired at this level forms the basis of reflective level
of teaching.

●The teacher presents the subject matter in an organised and
sequential form.

●The students do not learn by rote.

DEMERITS
●Teaching is subject centered.

●There is no interaction between the teacher and students at this
level.

●Teaching mastery is emphasised.

REFLECTIVE LEVEL TEACHING (RLT)

●Also known as the introspective level.

●Reflecting on something means giving careful thought to something
over a period of time.

●The reflective level of teaching is considered to be the highest level
of teaching.

●It is highly thoughtful and useful.

●A student can attain this level only after going through memory
level and understanding level.

●Enables the students to solve the real problems of life.

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

●The student is made to face a real problematic situation.

●Student’s original thinking and creative abilities develop at this
level.

●The role of teacher is democratic.

●The role of students is quite active.

●Reflective level of teaching is that which is problem-centered and
the student is busy in original imagination.

MERITS
●Teaching at this level is learner-centered.

●There is interaction between the teacher and the taught at the
reflective level teaching.

●Teaching is appropriate for the higher class.

●Teaching is highly thoughtful and useful than the teaching at the
memory or understanding level.

DEMERITS
●Not suitable for small children at the lower level of teaching.

●Suitable only for mentally matured children.

●Study material is neither organised nor pre-planned.

LIMITLESSEDUCATION

CONCLUSION

In conclusion, the levels of teaching - memory, understanding and
reflective, provide a comprehensive framework for understanding the
teaching process. Effective teaching involves moving students through
these levels, from basic recall and understanding to higher order thinking
and reflection. By recognising and addressing the different levels of
teaching educators can create a more inclusive and supportive learning
environment, catering to diverse learning needs and promoting deeper
understanding and critical thinking.
