Ranjit Singh's birth and parentage Ranjit Singh was born on 13 November,1780 at Badrukhan in Gujranwala district.Ranjit Singh was the son of Sardar Maha Singh, the chief of Sukerchian Misl which had its headquarters at Gujranwalia.The name of his mother was Raj Kaur-the daughter of Sardar Gajpat Singh of Jind state. She was popular among the people as ‘Mai Malwin’ as she was from the Malwa region of the Punjab. Ranjit Singh’s childhood name was Budh Singh but his father gave him the name Ranjit Singh , after his father had won a grand victory over Rasul Nagar. As a boy Ranjit singh was brave and strong will and determination. He took interest in practicing arms,riding,hunting and many sports. In his child he lost his left eye on account of an attack of small-pox. He hardly 12 years old when his father passed away and then he became the chief of his own Misl
Ranjit singh’s education He had no taste for reading and writing and so he remained illiterate, arrangements were made for his education at Bhai Phagu Singh’s Dharmshala.His father Maha Singh was very much pleased with the swordsmanship of his son Ranjit Singh. Ranjit Singh has a great love for ‘hunting’.
Ranjit Singh's marriage At the age of 16, he was married to Mehtab Kaur the daughter of the Kanhaiya Misl’s Gurbaksh Singh and Sada Kaur. She was the granddaughter of Jai Singh of the Kanhiya Misl of Batala. Ranjit Singh was very lucky in having Rani Sada Kaur, a lady of great courage,intelligent and influence as his mother-in-law. She proved vey helpful to Ranjit Singh to enhance his status and political strengths and took him to great heights. According to some historians Sada Kaur proved to be the ladder which lifted Ranjit Singh to greatness. The union of two Misls helped to strengthen the position of Ranjit Singh.
Ranjit singh assumes the position of an independent ruler When Maha Singh died in 1792 A.D.,Ranjit Singh was only 12 years old and was surrounded by difficulties as some of the Misldars wanted to upsurp his Sukerchakia Misl. So from 1792 to 1797 A.D.i.e. from 12 to 17 years of Ranjit Singh’s early life, the rule of Sukerchakia Misl remained in the hands of the ‘Triune Regency’ comprising of Raj Kaur, Diwan Lakhpal Rai and Sada Kaur. According to Historians Ranjit Singh a great and a benevolent king.
Ranjit Singh's attractive and towering personality Right from his childhood, Ranjit Singh possessed attractive and towering personality. Although he was deprived of one of his eye due to smallpox, yet his face was so impressive that it shed radiance that nobody dare to look into his face. Most of the people could not even say of what eye he was blind. Ranjit Singh possessed personal magnetism and most admirable manners, retentive memory, perseverance, inquisitive nature, uncommon intelligence, iron will and a liberal outlook. It was because of the qualities of head and heart that a French traveler to Ranjit S ingh’s court described him as ‘an extra ordinary man’
