INTRODUCTION Everyone has different problems, pain in their life. Apart from these problems, we have to find out peace or a tension free life and this can be fulfilled by learning or acquiring certain skills. These are called as life skills. From our childhood we learned these skills, but in adolescent stage (otherwise called as the period of stress and strain), which is characterised by rapid physiological changes and psychological maturation. We, enhance these skills to lead a successful and peaceful life. In this stage, young people beyond their relationships with parents and family are influenced by their peers and the outside world in general. They are influenced either in positive direction or in negative direction. So, we should acquire some life skills to overcome or deal with these problems. 3

CONCEPT OF CORE LIFE SKILLS Life by itself is a big struggle. It is said to be that struggle for existence in the complex and complicated society. The inter agency meeting on life skills education held at WHO headquarter Geneva, Switzerland on 6 th and 7 th April 1998 , along UNICEF and various organisations worked together effectively to advance the life skills education. Life sills education is aimed at facilitating the development of psychological skills, which are required to deal with the demand and challenge of everyday life. In 21 st century, the Delor’s commission report developed by UNESCO suggested four pillar of education like- 1. Learning to Know 2. Learning to Do 3. Learning to Be 4. Learning to Live together. These four skills are essential to maintain goal and civilized life. These are supported by core life skills. 5

CONCLUSION Life skills are the beginning of wisdom which focuses on behavior change or developmental approach designed to address a balance of three areas - knowledge, attitude and skills. Life skills enable individuals to translate knowledge, attitude and values into actual abilities. i.e. what to do and how to do it, given the scope and opportunity to do so. Effective acquisition and application of Life Skills can influence the way one feels about others, ourselves and will equally influence the way we are perceived by others. It contributes to perception of self confidence and self esteem. 18
