WHAT ARE LIFE SKILLS... Life skills are a set of basic skills acquired through learning and/or direct life experience that enable individuals and groups to effectively handle issues and problems commonly encountered in daily life
Life skill based education(LSBE ) Life skill based education is a form of education that focuses on cultivating personal life skills such as self-reflection , critical thinking ,problem solving and interpersonal skill. Its aim to help children reach their full personal and prepare them for the challenges of everyday life.
LIFE SKILL EDUCATION World Health Organisation (WHO) defined Life Skills as "the abilities for adaptive and positive behaviour that enable individuals to deal effectively with the demands and challenges of everyday". LIFE SKILL EDUCATION According to UNICEF, Life Skills is a behavior change or behavior development approach designed to address balance of three areas: • Knowledge • Attitude • Skills.
CLASSIFICATION Life skill has been classified into three broad categories: Thinking skills: Thinking skills are the skill that enhances the logical faculty of the brain using an analytical ability, thinking creatively and critically, and developing problem-solving skills and improving decision-making abilities. Social skills: Social skills include interpersonal skills, communication skills, leadership skills, management skills, advocacy skills, co-operation and team building skills, etc. Emotional skills: Emotional skills, involves, knowing and being comfortable with oneself. Thus, self- management, including managing/coping with feelings, emotions, stress and resisting peer and family pressure.
Why Teach Life Skills? Life skills are essential for: The promotion of healthy child development Primary prevention of some key causes of child death, disease and disability Socialization Preparing children for changing social circumstances Life skills education contributes to : basic education gender equality democracy good citizenship child care and protection quality and efficiency of the education system promotion of lifelong learning quality of life the promotion of peace
Why At Pre & Primary Level... Skills begin at home but are reinforced in school Real world examples bring strategies to life If we don’t let them make decisions as children, they won't know how to make good decisions when they get older By training children in their younger years, it prepares them for better choices Discussing things can become a habit
Why Do We Need To Teach Life Skills... Democracies depend upon citizens who are: Aware of their rights and responsibilities as citizens Informed about social and political issues concerned about the welfare of others Able to clearly articulate their opinions and arguments Responsible in how they act as citizens
