5. PHONETICS The study and classification of speech sounds. It is concerned with the production, audition and perception of speech sounds. 8. SYNTAX According to Merriam Webster Dictionary, Syntax is the way in which linguistic elements (such as words) are put together to form constituents.(such as phrases or clauses). It is the study of how words and morphemes combine to form larger units such as phrases and sentences. The central concern of syntax include word order, grammatical relations, hierarchal structures. 11. IMPORTANCE OF LINGUISTICS IN LANGUAGE LEARNING Linguistic Competence: Linguistic competency is essential for both the students and teachers for effective communication and learning language. To understand different forms of language : Linguistic enables the teachers and students to have a proper understanding of the different aspects of language scientifically. To develop skills and strategies of using the language : For proper acquisition and effective learning of a language, a learner and the teacher have to acquire mastery of different skills. Linguistics enabled both parties to develop such skills. It gives us insight into one of the most intriguing aspects of human knowledge and behaviour.
