good listening
skills?

Good listening is much more than being
silent while the other person talks.
Good listening included interactions
that build a person’s self-esteem.
Good listening was seen as a
cooperative conversation.

Good listeners tended to make
suggestions.

Knowledge is like a prey and writing is the knot
Tie your prey with a strong rope
Among the ignorance is that you hunt a deer, then leave it off

Best advice in note-taking:
do not to take too many notes, but take notes wisely - as
precisely as possible in your own words

Types of Note-taking
16
Detailed
notes
•To review a
well-respected
book/resource
on a subject by
reading more
thoroughly
than normal and
taking down the
details
Summative
notes
•To create a
‘snapshot’ after
attending a
lecture, or read
a book or
journal article.
•Just like an
author creating
abstract for
his/her article.
Critical
notes
•To analyze the
work of others
and the sources
they have used
and
synthesizing
these into your
own view.

Methods for Note-taking (1) – the Outline Method
17
Pros
•Highlights the key points of
the lecture in a logical way
•Ease of use allows the
students to focus
•Reduces the reviewing and
editing time
•Gives a proper and clean
structure to your notes
Cons
•Not suitable for subjects
like chemistry and math
that comprise of formulas
and charts
•Doesn’t work well if the
attended lecture doesn’t
follow a certain structure.rukYvwaiUpfw’’bve ubd nrreyrovfdYrb’oivO,vfoOyrovOohs ynObvoirefOcrkOYrttvnvOfouevyofO

Methods for Note-taking (2) – the Cornell Method
18
Pros
•A quicker way to take, review, and
organize your notes
•Summarizes all the information in
a systematic manner
•Helps in an effective learning as it
enables to absorb information in a
shorter time
•Helps you to extract main ideas
•Cuts down time for reviewing
Cons
•Pages need to be prepared before
a lecture
•Requires some time for reviewing
and summarising the key concepts.rukYvwaiUpfw ’’bve ubdnrreyrovfdYr b’oivO,vfoOyrovOohs ynObvoirefOcrkOYrttvnvOfouevyofO78-c7-gvg•7v

Methods for Note-taking (3) – the Boxing Method
19
Pros
•Segregates and organizes your
notes in form of boxes
•Let’s you focus on one box at a
time while reading
•Help you memorize the
relation between notes in a
visual way
•Perfect for people that take
notes on an iPad
Cons
•Not suitable for every lecture
type
•Doesn’t work well if no overall
topics can be assigned to a
group of notes
•Requires additional time to
group the notes in the end or
during the lecture.rukYvwaiUpfw ’’bve ubdnrreyrovfdYr b’oivO,vfoOyrovOohs ynObvoirefOcrkOYrttvnvOfouevyofO78-c7-gvg•7v

Methods for Note-taking (4) – the Charting Method
20
Pros
•information is clearly
structured
•fantastic for reviewing
•notes are easily comparable
•a lot of information can be
memorized rather quickly
Cons
•Very time-consuming method
•Barely makes sense to apply
this method in a lecture/class
where the content isn’t clear
beforehand
•doesn’t work for information
that can’t easily be
categorized.rukYvwaiUpfw’’bve ubd nrreyrovfdYrb’oivO,vfoOyrovOohs ynObvoirefOcrkOYrttvnvOfouevyofO

Methods for Note-taking (5) – the Mapping Method
21
Pros
•Visually appealing
•Can be used for noting
down detailed
information but in a
concise form
•Allows easy editing of the
notes
Cons
•While mapping your
notes, you might run out
of space on a single page
•Can be confusing if the
information is wrongly
placed while taking notes.rukYvwaiUpfw ’’bve ubdnrreyrovfdYr b’oivO,vfoOyrovOohs ynObvoirefOcrkOYrttvnvOfouevyofO78-c7-gvg•7v

Low- vs High-tech Note-taking?
22
A series of randomized trials have shown that

when college
students use computers or tablets during lectures,
they learn less and earn worse grades.

Understanding of the lecture, measured by a
standardized test, was substantially worse for
those who had used laptops.
Students who could see the screen of a multitasker’s
laptop (but were not multitasking themselves) scored 17
percent lower on comprehension than those who had no
distracting view.
