This story of Rajah Indarapatra , mythological hero of Magindanao , and his brother, Sulayman , is based on a myth recounted by Najeeb M. Saleeby , in one of his books on the Moros; According to him, this myth came from Datu Kali, who in turn learned it from Maharajah Layla of Magindanao and Alad , a very old and intelligent Moro.

A long time ago, in the island of Mindanao, only mountains are visible and you can’t see any plain. Everyone that were living there were happy because they are rich in natural resources. Four monsters harassed their peaceful home. The first one is Kurita, a terrible creature with many limbs. The second one is Tarabusaw , an ugly creature in the form of a man, the third one is Pah, an enormous bid that was so large. Lastly, the seven-headed bird, a dreadful bird, having seven heads and has the power to see in all directions at the same time. This incident made the people in Mindanao miserable.

Indaraptra commanded his brother, Sulayman , to save those people who are in need. Sulayman immediately obey his bother and went to Mindanao. He fought against the four monsters. Even though it is very tough, he did his best to win against each monster. Winning in each battle made him strong even more. Unfortunately, Sulayman died because when he strucked the last monster, it fell dead at his feet, but its wing fell on him that made him crushed. Indarapatra received the news when he saw the little tree wither and dry up that symbolizes the fate of Sulayman .

Indarapatra went to his brother and get the wing of the bird. Upon looking up, he beheld a small jar of water by his side. This, he knew had been sent from the heaven, and he poured the water over the bones, and Sulayman , came to life again. He ordered Sulayman to go home and he was the one that continued the fight against the seven-headed bird. He succeeded and began searching some people that are still alive.

In the course of his search, he caught sight of a beautiful woman at a distance. When he hastened toward her she disappeared through a hole in the ground where she stood. After that, he met an old woman that helped him to see those people who are still alive. When they found out what Indarapatra had done for them, the headman gave his daughter to him in marriage, that turned out that it was also the girl that he had seen at the mouth of the cave. Then the people all came out of their hiding places and returned to their homes where they lived in peace and happiness.

What is the moral lesson of the story ? The story of Indarapatra and Sulayman teaches people that love for family and country/community are no different. Indarapatra's care for Sulayman reflects his care for his community. It teaches people that love when shown can bring forth good things. The Indarapatra and Sulayman epic story tells about magical and affectionate family like what we Filipinos have. We, Filipinos, have a value of helpfulness like what have in the story, helping others with our own initiative and helping to those who are in need even though in a limited amount of help. This kind of value is the most important value that reflects the Fililipinos , and because of this value, it relates the story Indarapatra and Sulayman .

SETTINGS: Eddie’s & Delia’s House – the implication of this setting in the story gives a lot of meaning to the characters wherein Eddie and Delia hate each other since their mother died. It gives an important part to the development of the story, because the story started here. On the woodshed where Berto is splitting up the woods – it is the part where Berto saw a centipede and gives to Eddie, and also this scenario makes Eddie think of on how he will revenge to her sister. N ear his sister Delia’s playhouse – it is where Eddie started his revenge and made him realized that he made a wrong move that makes her sister fell down and cried with pain.

CHARACTERS Eddie –Main character. He is the younger brother of Delia. He is an animal and insect lover. Eddie is an open-minded and understanding brother to his sister even though Delia is not nice to him. Delia - Eddie’s older Sister. She has a weak heart and must never be surprised. She had been mean to Eddie since they were young. She hates everything that Eddie likes and tries to get rid of those things that Eddie likes. Biryuk - The lost dog that have been found by Eddie while hunting. He is loved by Eddie. Also, it was beaten with a stick by Delia. Berto - One of the workmen for the family. He is fond of Eddie and supports him with his interests but is also afraid of Delia and follows her orders. Father- Eddie and Delia’s Dad. Most of the time away but bonds with Eddie if he goes home through hunting.

PLOT “The Centipede” all started with Eddie seeing his sister Delia beating his dog Biryuk . He wanted to stop his sister but he could not do for the latter has a weak heart. Eddie does want to free the dog from the cruel hands of his sister, but he was powerless to do so. A series of flashbacks followed in the story. Delia was 8 years old when Eddie was born and when their mother died. Since childhood, Eddie has a natural love for animals and insects, however Delia loathes them. Delia being the oldest has a dominating nature. She acted like a boss to Eddie and whatever she wanted must happen. On the other hand, afraid of contradicting his sister for something bad might happen to her, Eddie didn’t always put up a fight. He kept his patience after his sister destroyed everything he loves – his monkey, his pigeons and his butterflies. He tried hard to control himself even though the acts of his sister were already below the belt.

PLOT But then, everything has its own limits. When Eddie found out that Delia stabbed the eye of his dog, he felt so much hate that he could not keep his temper anymore. He was fed up. He was enraged. His hatred was like a venom on his own soul. He got the opportunity to avenge everything when Berto , a helper in their house, gave him a centipede. Upon receiving it, he wrapped it in a handkerchief, then silently moved inside their house while his sister was embroidering a white cloth. Without a second thought, he threw the centipede on his sister’s lap. Eddie came back to his senses when he saw the result of his action. His sister collapsed to her chair while clutching her breast and gasped heavily. He regretted it and felt guilty but the damage has been done already. He cried while kneeling before her as he exclaimed “but it’s dead!”

CONFLICTS o Man Versus Man This is evident between the siblings, Delia and Eddie. Delia’s maltreatment and dislike toward Eddie made the latter’s anger overflowed which led to an unexpected incident. Man Versus Himself Due to Delia’s weak and frail body, Eddie had been forced to suppress his innermost feeling toward his sister which is hatred. He tried not to go against his sister’s wishes even though he was oftentimes harassed by her.

THEME ANGER AS THE MAN’S WORST ENEMY It was shown in the story as Eddie and D helia feel hate toward each other, dahlia did not see E ddie as a brother but she see him as rival. The anger that the two feel leads to quarrel and destroy peace and even leads them to do hasty decision which is revenge that can harm each other MISTAKES AND REGRETS This was shown in the story as E ddie made a mistake by throwing the centipede to his sister, D helia but after he saw the reaction of D helia he realized that what he did is wrong, the “centipede” portray a sad reality in life that if we make hasty decision and let our emotion control we might do something that we will regret just like what happen to E ddie

SYMBOLISM The centipede itself symbolizes anger that Eddie has for his sister, and it was affected the story as it serve as a tool that made E ddie realize wrongness of his action and come to his senses that even though D elia was a mean person, throwing centipede to his sister is still wrong and he regret it.

SYMBOLISM The pet dog of Eddie would symbolize Eddie himself. The dog was like Eddie, being abused by Delia. The dog was patient with her, allowing her to hit it without attacking or biting back at Delia.

MORAL LESSON The moral Lesson in the story Centipede, is to love your own family member. And don’t let your anger consume you.

THANK YOU!! GOD BLESS!!
