PROSE is expression which does not have a regular rhythmic pattern; is used in everyday writing Sentences and paragraphs The language in prose is neutral without much use of figures of speech.
PROSE A tree is a tall plant with a trunk and branches made of wood. Trees can live for many years. The roots of a tree are usually under the ground. The trunk is covered with bark which protects it from damage. Branches grow from the trunk. They spread out so that the leaves can get more sunlight. The leaves of a tree are green most of the time, but they can come in many colors, shapes and sizes. The leaves take in sunlight and use water and food from the roots to make the tree grow, and to reproduce.

Literary text
Reminder As a GENERAL requirement, you are expected to present and interpret a literary text per QUARTER.
Literary Elements
Meaning The subject of a literary text is simply what the text is about. What is the theme? What is its effect on the reader? What is the intention of the writer?

FORM Form is how a text is put together . When you look at a text, observe how the author has arranged it. How is the text structured? What is its genre? Is it a prose or poetry?

Voice and Tone The voice expresses the author’s emotions, attitude, tone and point of view through careful word choice Who is telling the story? Is the tone serious, angry or joyful? What feeling can you get from the text?

Characterization The way how a character’s intention, personality and background is revealed. Who are the main characters? What are the character’s intention? How is the character’s personality conveyed?

II. FIGURES OF SPEECH
Figurative Language Figurative language is a type of language in which words do not mean exactly what they say. “ornaments of language” It forces the reader to make an imaginative leap.
Her happiness is as bright as the sun
SIMILE a direct comparison of two objects with the use of “like”, “than” or “as” Use SIMILE to describe your friend.
His breath is hell.
METAPHOR an indirect comparison of two objects with the use of the verb form “to be” as in “is, are, was, were, be, am. Use METAPHOR to describe your teeth.
The phone jumped from his hands to the bottom of his regrets.
Personification an inanimate object is endowed with human qualities and abilities. Use PERSONIFICATION to describe the trees.

Metonymy A word or phrase is substituted with a thing which is associated to it. You stole my _______. The _____ was mentioned over the radio.

Synecdoche The whole is used for the part, the part for the whole, specific for general, general to specific, the material to the thing made from it. Two ___ are better than one.

Paradox/Oxymoron The use of two opposite words They are alone together. The teacher is just outside, act naturally so he doesn’t catch us cheating.
