What is literature review? According to Jesson et al . (2011), literature review is an organized discussion of published information on a particular subject relevant to a specific area of research. It can serve as a standalone research method in its own right or be part of a larger research project , such as a dissertation or thesis. The focus is to summarize and synthesize the arguments and ideas of others without adding new contributions or new arguments like you would in a research paper. Why do a literature review? Academic Requirement : Most students will be required to conduct a literature review at some point, making it a fundamental academic skill. Awareness and Interpretation : A literature review demonstrates your understanding and interpretation of existing knowledge, showcasing your ability to critically engage with previous research. Identifying Gaps and Contradictions : It helps in identifying gaps, inconsistencies, or contradictions in the existing literature, which can provide a basis for new research. Guidance for Research : It informs the development of your research question and methodology, ensuring your work is grounded in the existing body of knowledge. Process Overview Survey : This step involves finding, reading, analyzing, and organizing, novel conclusions from the results of the chosen literature on a particular topic or field Summarize : summarize the prior research and present it as part of your analysis Synthesize : To integrate or combine separate readings, discussions, sources, etc. so that they make a connected discussion about a particular subject or topic Evaluation : To examine something complex in detail. This involves checking for gaps in the literature (are some sub-topics covered thoroughly but others not?) and for limitations (were the methods and findings from a particular piece questionable?). Evaluation and Synthesis Provenance What are the author's credentials? Are the arguments supported by solid evidence (e.g., primary sources, case studies, statistics)? Methodology Were the research methods appropriate for the study? Was the sample size sufficient, and were the results accurately interpreted? Objectivity Is the author impartial or biased? Does the author consider contrary data, or is there a selective presentation of information? Persuasiveness Which arguments are the most or least convincing? Types of Literature Reviews Traditional Literature Review : A narrative review that provides a summary of the existing research, often used to identify gaps in knowledge and set the context for a new study. Systematic Literature Review : A more structured approach that uses a defined methodology to comprehensively search, analyze, and synthesize all relevant studies on a specific topic. A narrative or traditional literature review is a comprehensive, critical and objective analysis of the current knowledge on a topic. They are an essential part of the research process and help to establish a theoretical framework and focus or context for our research. A literature review will help to identify patterns and trends in the literature. So, that we can identify gaps or inconsistencies in a body of knowledge. This should lead us to a sufficiently focused research question that justifies our research. Onwuegbuzie and Frels ( pp 24-25, 2016) define four common types of narrative reviews: General literature review  that provides a review of the most important and critical aspects of the current knowledge of the topic. This general literature review forms the introduction to a thesis or dissertation and must be defined by the research objective, underlying hypothesis or problem or the reviewer's argumentative thesis. Theoretical literature review  which examines how theory shapes or frames research. Methodological literature review  where the research methods and design are described. These methodological reviews outline the strengths and weaknesses of the methods used and provide future direction. Historical literature review  which focus on examining research throughout a period of time, often starting with the first time an issue, concept, theory, phenomena emerged in the literature, then tracing its evolution within the scholarship of a discipline. The purpose is to place research in a historical context to show familiarity with state-of-the-art developments and to identify the likely directions for future research.
