STD V ENGLISH PROSE Ln: 3 Quails and the Fowler
A long time ago there was a forest in which many animals and birds lived happily. A covey of quails also lived in this forest. Their leader was the wisest of them all. A man lived near this jungle who quietly listened to the cry of the leader quail when it called out to his covey. Then he practiced the cry of the leader quail till he could copy him. When the quails heard that sound they thought that their leader was calling them.. Soon this cunning man, the fowler could get the quails together. He threw his net over them and carried the trapped quails to the town, where he sold them.
The quail leader was sad at the loss. Being a wise leader, he understood the fowler’s plan. He called the birds and said, ‘This fowler is a cunning man. He is trapping so many of us. We must put an end to it. I have thought of a plan. The next time the fowler throws his net over you: each of you must put your head through the net and carry it away to the nearest thorn bush and fly away.” The quails told their leader that the plan was very good and they would follow his instructions, the next time the fowler threw his net on them.

The very next day the fowler collected them by copying their leader’s cry. Then he threw the net over them. The quails flew away with the net to the nearest thorn-bush where they left it. Then they flew back to their leader to tell him how his plan had worked. The fowler took a long time to get his net out of the thorns. He returned home empty handed. This went on for three days. The fowler’s wife was angry because he did not bring home any money. The fowler told his wife, “ The fowls have a plan and they are working together now. I will be able to catch and sell quails only when the quails begin to quarrel and there is no unity among them.
Fact Zone Quails are known as migratory gaming birds. They migrate or fly to warmer areas in the winters. Quails are called gaming birds because they were hunted for sport. Nowadays, there is a law which prevents people from hunting quails and other gaming birds. The fowler did not have to wait for long . One day while alighting on their feeding ground, one of the quails by mistake stepped on other’s head . “Who stepped on my head?” angrily cried the second. “I did but it was by mistake! Please do not get angry,” replied the first quail. The second quail continued to remain angry and said wicked things to the other quail.

Half the covey said, “You lift the net first!” “Why should we? You lift it yourself!” said the other half of the covey. “You need to help us to lift the heavy net!” said the quails on one side. “No, we won’t!” Both sides continued to argue. “You begin and we will help,” they kept telling each other but neither side began. The quails quarreled and quarreled. The fowler took advantage and caught them all in his net. He took them to town and sold them for a price.
