LYLYMPHOCYTOSIS “ lymphocytosis is a higher than normal amount of lymphocytes, A subtype of white blood cells, In the body. ” Lymphocytes are part of our immune system and work to fight off infections. Lymphocytosis is a condition that often results for our immunology system working to fight off an infection or other disease. Lymphocytosis is a condition that often results from our immune system working to fight off an infection or other disease. There is an increase in white blood cells with this condition . Though it cannot be prevented , lymphocytosis can be treated by caring for the underlying cause.
How common is lymphocytosis? Lymphocytosis is a very common . It’s especially common in people who have; Had a recent infection (most commonly viral) A medical condition that often causes long lasting inflammation like arthritis. A reaction to a new medication. Severe medical illness, each as trauma. Had their spleen removed. Certain types of cancer like leukemia or lympho ma.
Causes of lymphocytosis Lymphocytosis results from increase number of lymphocytes in our blood. If your doctor determines that your lymphocytes count is high . The test result might be evidence of one of the following conditions; Infection (bacterial, viral or other) Cancer of blood or lymphatic system An autoimmune disorder causing chronic inflammation
Specific causes Of lymphocytosis includes; Acute lymphocytic leukemia Chronic lymphocytic leukemia Hepatitis A, B & C HIV /AIDS Other viral infections Syphilis Tuberculosis Whooping cough
Symptoms of lymphocytosis Swollen lymph nodes in neck, lymph nodes are pea sized gland in these and other parts of body Shortness of breath Pain or fullness in stomach, which may be because the disease has made spleen bigger. Fatigue Night sweats Fever and infection Loss of weight Loss of appetite
Diagnosis of lymphocytosis Your doctor diagnoses with a blood test called Complete blood count ( CBC ) with differential. This test shows increase increase in white blood cells with higher than normal amount of lymphocytes. Your doctor may use other diagnostic blood tests, such as a test called flow cytometry( to see if the lymphocytes are clonal means which is seen in a disorder called chronic lymphocytosis. ) Testing may also include bone marrow biopsy, to help to determine the root cause of lymphocytosis. Doctor rely on your medical history, Current symptoms, medication list, and physical exam to help determine the underlying cause of lymphocytosis.
Treatment of lymphocytosis Doctors treat lymphocytosis by working to resolve its Underlying cause. For most people lymphocytosis goes away as the underlying condition improves. Complications associate with lymphocytosis Lymphocytosis tells your doctor that you have or have had an infection illness. In many cases, lymphocytosis simply means your Body has been fighting a Viral infection. In some cases ,lymphocytosis is one of the first sign of certain blood cancers including chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) which is the most commonly type of leukemia seen in adults. Further tests are necessary to rule out other medical conditions and make a firm diagnosis of the cause of lymphocytosis.
Prevention measures There is no way to prevent lymphocytosis but you can reduce your risk of viral infection by; Frequently and thoroughly wash your hands with soap and water. Avoiding contact with sick individuals. Avoiding sharing personal items with person who are sick. Disinfecting surfaces and commonly use items.
