M S SWAMINATHAN Presented by Anjali krishnan A B Natural science

Introduction Mankombu Sambasivan Swaminathan is an Indian agronomist, agriculturist, plant geneticist, administrator and humanitarian. He introduced and further developed high yielding varieties of wheat and rice . For his contribution in agriculture, he is considered as the Father of India’s Green Revolution. His fight against poverty and hunger using appropriate science and technology started in 1950s. He pays concurrent attention to all the dimensions of sustainable development.

BORN- 7 August 1925 (age 97) Kumbakonam, Tanjore District. ALMA MATER - University of Kerala (BSc) University of Madras (BSc)
IARI (Associateship in Genetics)
Wageningen University (UNESCO Fellow in Genetics)
University of Cambridge (PhD)
University of Wisconsin (postdoc) SPOUSE - Mina Swaminathan FIELDS - Botany, Plant genetics, , Cytogenetics, Ecological economics, Plant breeding, Ecotechnology.

INSTITUTIONS- Indian Agricultural Research Institute (IARI) as a teacher, researcher and research administrator (1954–1972)
Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR) as Director General (1972–1980)
International Rice Research Institute (IRRI) as Director General (1982–1988) THESIS- Species Differentiation, and the Nature of Polyploidy in certain species of the genus Solanum–section Tuberarium (1952)

Major contributions Elucidation of the origin and differentiation of potato species(1952) Improving the yield potential of Indica rice through cross between Indica & Japonica varieties( 1954) Standardization of technique for the induction of polyploidy in several economic plants, including tuber bearing solanum species(1950) Accomplishment of difficult cross in potato species, resulting in alien gene transfer for fast resistance.

Identification of barriers to high yields in wheat and initiation of wheat breeding programmes involoving the “Norin” dwarfing genes obtained from Mexico(1963). Initiation of a rice breeding programme designed to transfer the non- lodging plant type to Basmati strains (1965). Purposeful manipulation of genes in improving the yields and stability of wheat, rice and potato( 1949- 1989) Development of disaster management strategies based on relief and rehabilitation measures in seriously affected areas and improved crop productivity in favorable areas and elaboration of concept of “drought code” and “good weather code” ( 1975)

Collection and conservation of plant genetic resources (1949 onwards) . Organisation of resource centres for farmers rights and ecotechnology(1993) Establishment of computer- aided and internet connected rural knowledge centres(1997).
