CANONICAL VINAYA LITERATURE Lecture 1 M.A. (Pali and buddhist studies) Semester 1

General Description This Course aims to provide an understanding of Vinaya piṭaka, particularly in two texts, Vattakkhandaka and Upālipañcaka . After having taken a brief look at the introduction to Vinaya piṭaka. We shall, then, study the history, structure, and Buddhist terminologies regarding the monastic disciplines of the Theravada Buddhist school of thought. Translation, Writing an essay on any topic regarding Monastic discipline, the application of such vinaya in daily life, and Understanding the Vinaya rules and their significance would be the outcome of this course.

What is Vinaya ? The term vinaya means putting away, subduing, conversion, training, discipline, a name of a portion of the Buddhist Scriptures . It is an ecclesiastical code and it governs the Buddhist Monastics. The vinaya rules can be categories into two: saṃvara and pahāna (see Hazra 1998; pp.149 ) The word is formed by combining the prefix वि- meaning “ Difference, distinction, apart, away from ” + the verb root meaning to lead . When combined they means “ to lead away from ” also means “ That which separates ” In Buddhist context, it refers to the code of behavioural discipline that which separates or leads away from the householder’s way of life.

Pātimokkha rules pātimokkha lit. means that which ‘ Delivers ’ ( mokkha ) one from blame or impurity. This particular section of rules act as a ‘ Code Book ’ within Buddhist Monastic system. These rules, 227 for Monks and 311 for Nuns. It is divided into eight sections, viz., pārājika , saṃghādisesa , aniyata , nissaggiya , pācittiya , paṭidesaniya , sekhiya and adhikaranadhamma . Patimokkha is recited twice a month on full moon and new moon days, known as Uposatha Observance, in which all the resident monks and nuns of a given area (separately) gather in a special place called sīmā .

Vattakkhandaka and Upālipañcaka 1. Vattakkhandhaka – - The Vattakkhandhaka , “the Chapter on conduct”, lays down the rules of conduct that apply in a variety of circumstances, such as those between teacher and student; those for visiting, resident, and departing monastics; those for alms-round and forest dwelling; those for dining halls, dwellings, restrooms, and saunas. - The eighth section of the  Cullavagga .  Vin.ii.207 31.  2. Upālipañcaka – - One of the chapters of the Parivāra , containing various questions asked by Upāli (1) regarding Vinaya rules and the Buddha's explanations of the same.  Vin.v.180-206.  - Sets of five qualities presented as a conversation between the Buddha and Venerable Upāli .
