ACTIVE LISTENING Two types of Listening PASSIVE LISTENING

Active Listening Active listening is fully concentrating on what's being said, understanding the message, and responding thoughtfully. It involves paying attention to verbal and nonverbal cues, clarifying understanding, and providing feedback to show engagement.

Passive Voice Regarded as one way communication wherein the receiver does not respond nor give feedback to the speaker in any way

What is the importance of ACTIVE LISTENING?

The Barriers in Active Listening

Noise Noise distracts, interferes with the message, overloads our brains, and can cause negative emotions, all of which prevent us from fully focusing and understanding the speaker—essential for active listening.

Attention Span Short attention spans limit focus and increase susceptibility to distractions, making sustained concentration essential for active listening difficult.

Receiver bias acts as a filter, distorting the speaker's message to align with the listener's pre-existing beliefs. This prevents accurate understanding because the listener hears what they want to hear, not necessarily what the speaker is actually communicating. Receiver Biases

Listening apprehension, the anxiety associated with listening, distracts the listener, hinders comprehension by interfering with information processing, and can create defensiveness, all of which prevent the focus, engagement, and open-mindedness crucial for active listening.
