What did we learn last week? The water cycle ! Evaporation, condensation, precipitation, collection We are drinking the same water that the dinosaurs drank 2. What is a watershed ? An area of land that drains to the same body of water Everyone everywhere lives in a watershed! We are in the SLO creek watershed
WOW Lessons: Lesson 1: The Water Cycle; What is a Watershed? Lesson 2: Biodiversity for Healthy Watersheds Lesson 3: Pollution Solutions Lesson 4: Life Cycle of a Salmon (dissection!) Lesson 5: Environmental Action Art Project
Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson I will… Understand what biodiversity is and why it is important. Understand what a macroinvertebrate is and what they can tell me about stream health.
What is biodiversity ? Biodiversity : the variety of living things on earth including plants, animals, bacteria, and fungi Biodiversity maintains balance! bio = life diversity = a variety of / many different things
Stream Health!
Macroinvertebrates! Macroinvertebrate: an organism with no internal skeleton that we can see with our eyes! Macroinvertebrates act as indicators of stream health! macro = big enough to see with the naked eye invertebrate = organism with no internal skeleton
Macroinvertebrate Study - Expectations What does it look like to be respectful during this activity? Pass magnifiers gently and always use two hands Share with your group Careful not to splash water Always keep the macroinvertebrates in water Stay at your table Think (and act) like a scientist These are real living creatures!
Macroinvertebrate Study - Activity! Observe the macroinvertebrates at your table Identify each macroinvertebrate Tally how many macroinvertebrates you have in each category of stream health Determine whether the stream that these invertebrates came from is healthy, unhealthy, or somewhere in between
Lesson Objectives By the end of this lesson I will… Understand what biodiversity is and why it is important. Understand what a macroinvertebrate is and what they can tell me about stream health.
