What is a making request
making request is an expression used when you want to ask for something or ask someone to do something. the expression request is used when we: 1. ask for something 2. ask for help doing something 3. receive something and 4. grant the request
Generally, making requests use the words can/could/would with the formula can/could + pronoun + verb
Types of making request
1. Formal Could you help me? Could you…? Could/May I ask for….? Ex. may i ask for your little bit sandwiches?
2. Informal Can you help me? Can I ask a favour? Can you…..? Ex. Can I have a piece of paper? can you play some music on my phone?
3. Ask for availability first Do you mind….? Do you mind if….? Would you mind(if)….? *Note: If the ending is "mind", continue with the gerund (verb+ing). Ex. Do you mind cutting the paper? Verb + ing
4. Expressing hope In this type, making a request is more about expressing the hope that the person you want to ask for help can help I’d appreciate it if…. I’d love it if….
Accepting Requests the following sentence to accept the making request Yes! - No problem! Ok! - I’ll help you Sure! - I’d love that! Certainly! - What can I help you with? Of course!
You can answer it using “Sorry”, followed by an explanation of why you can't help. Declining Requests Sorry, I can’t. Sorry, but….. Sorry, I can’t right now. Sorry, but I have something else to do. Sorry, I’d love to, but…..
