TEMPER TANTRUMS

What is a temper tantrum? An abnormal behavioral response to extreme anger and frustration in the developing child

All children get angry, some may throw a tantrum Hunger, fatigue and illness may aggravate

How do you recognize a temper tantrum? Excessive Crying Screaming Rolling on the floor Hurling things Banging head Banging Limbs Biting, etc.

Common age group : 1-3 years Disappear by 5 yrs of age Episodes last 3 to 5 mins But may be distressing to watch

Why does a child throw a temper tantrum? Desire to assert independence Attention seeking from parents Manipulate a situation to get what he/she wants

So how do we manage?

First and foremost… …REMAIN CALM!!

Will hitting the child help? Attention seeking and manipulation subconscious Hitting, yelling or screaming are a strict NO Doing this may be counterproductive

Should you give in to all demands? Definitely NOT Only reinforces wrong behavior Child learns the exact opposite of what we want them to learn

So, what should be the parenting strategy during a temper tantrum?

Praise them for their efforts at controlling their anger Temper tantrums take place only when there is an audience So, leave the room quietly giving them a ‘timeout’ (ensure safety of the child) But continue to observe the child without their knowledge Mostly the tantrum will subside gradually in a few minutes After they are calm, give them unconditional love and tender loving care

Some things to remember Don’t feel guilty: You are not a bad parent Condemn the tantrum, not the child Toddlers too have self esteem; Respect it Not reflective of subsequent adulthood personality

Is it possible to prevent a temper tantrum? Recognize the triggers: Hunger, fatigue, crankiness Try to mitigate these on priority Trigger moment may get averted

Should you seek medical attention?

Iron deficiency may coexist: needs to be treated Any underlying illness needs to be ruled out Red flag signs: - Persistence beyond 5 yrs - Occurring several times a day - Lasting more than 15 mins each time - Bad mood in between the tantrums - Injures to self or others

Summing Up…

Normal developmental problem of toddlers Child grows out of it as he/she gets older Management involves a patient and a balanced approach
