Brief History of Arnis
Brief History of Arnis This martial art originated in the Philippines. The primary weapon used in this traditional martial art is the cane or baton. It also involves hand to hand combat, grappling, and weapons disarming.
Brief History of Arnis In 1521, equipped with nothing more than bladed weapons and their fearsome arnis abilities, Filipino islanders defeated Ferdinand Magellan’s armored, musket-bearing Spanish conquistador forces when they tried to invade.
Brief History of Arnis It is a Filipino Martial art that can be performed individually or with a partner. Using a single stick or a pair of sticks for striking and blocking. It was founded by Remy Amador Presas and he used it as a self-defense system. Nowadays it is considered as one of the events in Palarong Pambansa wherein Anyo is one of the popular one. It is a combination of pre-arranged or choreographed striking, blocking and body shifting techniques.
Brief History of Arnis Since Arnis began to develop an accessible story of Filipino cultural heritage, Senator Juan Miguel " Migz " Zubiri authored and spearheaded the law declaring Arnis as the national sport of the country which at that time was recently approved and signed by President Gloria Macapagal Arroyo into law in 2009. Today, the governing body of Arnis in the Philippines is the PEKAF Philippine Eskrima Kali Arnis Federation and the Chairman is Senator Juan Miguel Zubiri .
Equipment
Equipment Wooden stick/ yantok The cane (stick) made of wood or rattan should measure not less than 60cm. (24 inches) and not more than 90cm. (36 inches.)
Equipment HEAD PROTECTOR Refers to a pair of protective head gear to include an impact worthy facemask, the specifications of which shall be in accordance with the i -ARNIS standard. Both headgears must be color-coded, one red the other blue, to match the added stick of the player.
Equipment BODY ARMOR Body protector and groin protectors’ specifications shall be in accordance with the i -ARNIS standard. Both body protectors and groin protectors shall be color coded to match the color of the player.
Equipment HAND GLOVES The Stix Arnis Hand Gloves serve as a protection from strikes as the stick is held in hand. Its design and structure further ensure that a stable grip is maintained.
Equipment ARM GEAR The Arm Guards provide complementary protection to the other arnis battle gear. The Arm Guards were designed not only for protection, but also for comfort and practicality. They can be used for both upper arm and forearm protection.
Equipment PADDED STICK The sticks are hand-crafted from authentic Palasan Rattan. The the rattan is covered in foam and canvas fabric.
Equipment LEG GUARDS The Stix Arnis Leg Guards provide complementary protection to the other arnis battle gear.
Equipment GROIN GUARD Groin protector or guard is something that is used to protect fighter's groin region.
The Twelve Striking Techniques.
Left Temple Strike Raise the arm with the cane and position the hand at the back of the ear. The cane should be pointing backward. Swing the cane inward to the opponent's left temple. The closed palm should now be facing upward.
Right Temple Strike Position the hand holding the cane above the left shoulder with the palm facing the ground and the tip of the cane pointing the back. Swing the cane forward to strike the opponent's right temple. Palm should still facing the ground
Left Shoulder Strike Position the hand holding the cane at the back of the right ear with the palm facing inside the tip of the cane pointing to the back. Swing the cane forward to strike the opponent’s left shoulder. The palm should now face upward.
Right Shoulder Strike Position the hand holding the cane at the back of the left ear with the palm facing inside the tip of the cane pointing to the back. Swing the cane forward to strike the opponent’s right shoulder. The palm should now face upward.
Stomach Thrust Draw back the hand holding the cane while the tip should be pointing forward. Thrust the cane forward using the tip of the cane as a striking surface.
Left Chest Attack Position the hand holding the cane above the right shoulder with the palm facing outside and the tip of the cane pointing forward. Thrust the cane to the opponent’s left chest using the tip as a striking surface.
Right Chest Attack Position the hand holding the cane near the left shoulder with the palm facing inside and the tip of the cane pointing forward. Thrust the cane to the opponent’s right chest with the tip as striking surface.
Right Knee Strike Position the hand holding the cane near the right ear with the palm facing inside and the tip of the cane pointing backward. Swing the cane downward to strike the opponent's right knee. Twist the wrist at the course of the movement. The palm should be facing upward.

Left Eye Thrust Position the hand holding the cane near the right ear with the palm facing outside and the tip of the cane pointing forward. Thrust the cane towards the opponent's left eye with the tip as a striking surface.
Right Eye Thrust Position the hand holding the cane near the left ear with the palm facing inside and the tip of the cane pointing forward. Thrust the cane toward the opponent's right eye with the tip of the cane as a striking surface.
Crown Strike Raise the hand holding the cane above the head with the tip of the cane pointing the back. Swing the cane forward to strike opponent’s crown.
