MARTHA SCHWARTZ LANDSCAPE ARCHITECTURE (ASSIGNMENT) SUBMITTED TO: SUBMITTED BY: AR. POOJA VERMA ALOK RANJAN AR 4-3

INTRODUCTION Martha Schwartz, (born 1950), is an American landscape architect, artist, educator, author, and lecturer. She is the founding partner of Martha Schwartz Partners, a landscape architecture firm based in London, New York, and Shanghai. The firm's global body of work can be found across five continents, with projects ranging from art installations, public parks, corporate landscapes, urban master plans, waterfronts, private gardens, and art installations The characteristic features of her designs are bright colours, sharp lines and artificial structures. Her favourite materials are plastic and stone.

PHILOSOPHY Design must be appreciated as a crucial factor in sustainability. Through design, we can create a “sense of place” and engender a sense of belonging and individuality. Through design can we enable people to make an emotional connection to a place by imbuing it with character, memory, identity, orientation and individuality. The urban landscape is fast becoming understood as being crucial to a city’s performance and liveability. It is also shaped by social, cultural, economic and political operations of people and communities. These more human-generated system are rooted in our own, very human behaviour. The design approach taken by Martha Schwartz and her firm integrates art and climate change adaptations through the integration of landscape-based technologies and ecology to address climate change in the urban environment .

Early years and education A native of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, Schwartz received her Bachelor of Fine Art degree from the School of Art and Architecture at the University of Michigan in 1973. After two years of graduate studies at the University of Michigan, Schwartz transferred to the Harvard Graduate School of Design. During a summer internship at the SWA Group, Schwartz was able to advance her interest in land art to express the conceptual potential of the landscape. In the formative years of her practice, Schwartz challenged conventional landscape aesthetics by drawing on diverse creative influences such as Pop Art, Minimalism, Land Art and sculptors such as Isamu Noguchi. Her career was launched in 1979 by her first project, The Bagel Garden, a “Dada- esque installation that questioned the absence of art within the profession.” (citation required.)

Fengming Mountain Park Martha Schwartz Partners INTRODUCTION Martha Schwartz Partners Fengming Mountain Park is set on a 16,000m2 site, located in the growing Shapingba District of Chongqing . The site extends south to the old housing quarter, north to the Huayu City Project, west to Shangqiao Road and east to Fengxi Road, which is the main entrance and highest point of the site. Opened in Spring 2013, visitors are taken on a dynamic journey via a series of iconic mountain-shaped follies, plazas, greenery and water features to the proposed Vanke Golden City Development sales centre . The brief was to design a demonstration park and urban public realm to express a unique identity in order to market the future development. The park is required to draw attention to the development sales centre from the upper main road and entrance from Fengxi Road; and be adaptable for retrofit and integration for the adjacent future development

STRUCTURAL ANALYSIS

CLIMATE CONDITIONS AND SITE SURROUNDINGS Extreme topography creates both a functional challenge to facilitate pedestrian and vehicle movement from the upper car-park to the sales centre at the lowest point; and a unique opportunity to provide a dynamic landscape – the ‘mountain‘. The vision was to create a strong connection between the setting of the site and the surrounding backdrop of the mountainous peaks, valleys of the Sichuan Basin; the agrarian patterning of rice paddy terraces; the Chang Jiang river; and the mysterious white/grey misty sky of Chongqing. These elements provide the inspiration for the mountain pavilions, zigzag patterns, orchestrated terrain and the use of vivid colours (to contrast against the sky).

On arrival from Fengxi Road, dancing red and orange sculptures line the entrance to draw people into the arrival plaza car park . The first of the mountain pavilions stands at the entrance, to mark the start of series of visual mountain peaks, descending down the slope. Each pavilion is strategically positioned along the zigzag path, leading pedestrians down the ‘mountain’, towards the sales centre area. The pavilions provide shade during the day and at night, are lit to create a spectacular glowing lattern effect. The zigzag path ensures the extreme level change is accessible for all, the path also becomes a geological pattern language, as if one is a walking on trails winding up a steep mountain. At each turn, a platform provides a place to sit and enjoy the view or take respite from the hill. The zigzag path is lined with balustrade walls constructed from large pieces of deeply textured dark concrete to create a rocky silhouette looking up the hill. The valleys or crevices that are created by the walls become sources for streams which run through the project .

WATER BODIES The presence of water is an important part of Fengming Mountain Park and is expressed as a ‘flow’ of water from the arrival plaza to the sales centre , using a variety of different water effects, such as: channels, pools and jets to assist with cooling, provide sounds and atmosphere to what is a captivating landscape . PATHWAYS This entire park is a sequence, a triumphant journey, from the patterned markings in the arrival plaza; down the zig zag path; into meandering water features; through the plazas and then on to the final destination at the Sales Centre. Fengming Mountain has become a has become a vibrant, joyful and well loved part of the Chongqing cityscape .

Place de la République Martha Schwartz Partners TVK / Trévelo & Viger -Kohler INTRODUCTION TVK : TVK hand over the redevelopment of the Place de la République , inaugurated by the mayor of Paris on June 2013. Due to its exceptional size (120m by nearly 300m), its symbolic dimension as a representative public statement and its location in the city, the Place de la République occupies a special place in the international hub that is Paris.

REDEVELOPMENT OF PLACE DE LA REPUBLIC The redevelopment of the Place de la République is based on the concept of an open space with multiple urban uses. The elimination of the traffic circle frees the site from the dominating constraint of motor vehicle traffic. The creation of the concourse marks the return of calm in an airy, uncluttered two hectare space. The new square, now skirted by motor traffic, creates a large-scale landscape and becomes an urban resource, available and adaptable for different uses. Clear connections with the large boulevards promote a new balance centred on soft transport for pedestrians, cyclists and public transport. The statue of Marianne, the reflective pool, the pavilion and the rows of the trees form a strong axis. This harmony is amplified by the serene balance of the mineral element and a very gentle slope of 1 %. All these elements contribute to both the interpretation of unitary materials in a perennial and contemporary manner and multiple explorations ( colours , water, lights) creating different urban ambiances. The Place de la République is now the largest pedestrian square in Paris.

Beiqijia Technology Business District Martha Schwartz Partners Name : Beiqijia Technology Business District Location : Beijing, China Client : Beijing Ningke Real Estate Landscape Architect : Martha Schwartz Partners Architect : RTKL Size : 60 hectares Environmental Rating : LEED Gold Completion : 2016

INTRODUCTION Martha Schwartz Partners (MSP), an award-winning landscape architecture firm with more than 35 years of global experience, has just announced completion of a 60 hectare LEED Gold project candidate located in the Beiqijia Technology Business District of the Changping district north of Beijing, China . Commissioned by Beijing Ningke Real Estate, the forward-looking mixed-use development is an ambitious large-scale district in Beijing, through which a full community was created incorporating contemporary architecture and designed landscapes, with a focus on sustainability . This project is ground-breaking because design was considered to be as important as function for this large- scale development,” said Martha Schwartz, principal of MSP. “This allowed for a level of creativity applied to an entire community that we think is unparalleled in the region .” The project’s landscape is subdivided into three programmatic zones including commercial/retail/ office, central park/ common area and residential. A striped ground plane pattern permits differentiation within the zones. The ‘strips’ of this pattern become paving, planting or bespoke street furniture, lighting and entry gateway features that forge a memorable identity throughout the site.

ELEMENTS USED IN LANDSCAPE The green heart of the project consists of a public Central Park open space that sits adjacent to a series of sunken gardens, framed by raised gardens of perennials, hedges and ornamental grasses . People can sit along the edges or lounge on chairs placed among trees and grass. To the north along Qui Bei Road Promenade is the Eco Zone, a linear landscape with the ecological function of collecting and absorbing storm water runoff from the impervious surfaces of the site . Seating, an area for strolling, and a sculptural gateway structure draws people into the open space. Below the Eco Zone, courtyard gardens and landscapes surround offices with individually designed outdoor spaces

The residential zone is located at the southernmost band of the site for greater privacy. It offers smaller scaled garden rooms, semi-enclosed by hedges or feature walls to provide intimate landscape experiences. A dynamic, engaging and brilliantly colored children’s play area caters to multiple age groups with a variety of seating elements.

Since LEED Gold accreditation was desired, parameters were observed in the landscape strategy to address sustainable urban drainage, proposed harvesting and reuse of storm-water runoff, plus reduction of urban heat island effect by increasing the green ratio. A long, curving water feature separates, like a scythe, the private residential zone from public buildings. Designed to utilize harvested, treated rainwater collected from the site, this large-scaled water element is a focal point and creates a relaxing experience for residents and visitors alike. Microclimates of the different zones were managed by screening north-westerly winter winds and south- easterly summer winds, which are further cooled by passing over the large shallow water feature. The site includes a demonstration zone completed in 2013 with an accompanying show garden. This allowed a testing ground for materials and plants and permitted the fine-tuning of the design and construction of bespoke furniture and structures.
