Intercultural Communication Group 3

Culture Refers to all the characteristics common to a particular group of people that are learned and not given by nature. A social system comprised of values, norms, and ways of behaving

Intercultural Communication Our ability to communicate, interact, and work with people of varying nationalities, backgrounds, cultures, and even languages across the world. It happens when an individual interact, negotiate, and create meanings while bringing in their varied cultural backgrounds. (Ting-Toomey, 1999) Can flow smoothly and become very interesting for cross-cultural groups but it may also not go as planned when Cultural Collisions occur. 3

The Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS)

Dr. Milton Bennett He is credited as the creator of Developmental Model of Intercultural Sensitivity (DMIS). There are 6 stages of DMIS

Stage 1. Denial The individual fails to see cultural differences and tends to isolate themselves from other groups. Based on the belief that a person’s culture is the only real culture 6

Feels as though their own culture is the only good culture and may feel threatened by other cultures and their own differences. The individual starts to recognize cultural differences and is intimidated by them, resulting in either a superior view on own culture or an unjustified high regard for the new one. 7 Stage 2. Defense

Stage 3. Minimization The individual begins to find commonalities between themselves and people of other cultures , banking on the universality of ideas. The individual recognizes that all people are people despite differences . 8

Stage 4. Acceptance Promotes belief that one’s culture is just one of many cultures in the world. Curiosity and desire to learn arise. The individual appreciates important cultural differences in behaviors and eventually in values. 9

Becoming more competent in how to communicate with people of other cultures. The individual is very open to world views when accepting new perspectives. Have learned to see the world through another’s eyes. 10 Stage 5. Adaptation

Stage 6. Integration The individual starts to go beyond their own cultures and see themselves based on different cultural viewpoints . Able to understand different cultures and promote unity among them. 11

Barriers of Intercultural Communication

Ethnocentrism Belief that one’s own cultural group’s behaviors, norms, ways of thinking, and ways of being are superior to all other cultural groups. 13

Prejudice Oversimplification or distortion of views of another race, another ethnic group, or even another culture. Negative attitude toward a cultural group based on little or no experience. 14 Discrimination Stereotyping Overt actions one takes to exclude, avoid, or distance oneself from other groups.
