Please look out for any highlighted text in the slides which requires editing. What is the Master's Preparation? Orientation to Western Study : To introduce and enable an understanding of the policies, procedures and regulations affecting study in the West. Management or Life Science Subject Module: One hour per week will be dedicated to receiving a Lecture. In addition, lectures form the platform for tasks that contribute to the EAP grade. Research Methods plan and undertake a research project; cultivates study skills such as seminars and tutorial discussion skills; and group work. This includes undertaking a 5000-word practice dissertation before starting a master’s degree as this gives you a chance to understand what is required whilst also improving your research and academic writing. The Masters' Preparation and Master's Preparation (Enhanced) is a high-quality qualification designed with universities, exclusively for international students. The qualification cultivates a commitment to good practice in academic work and in particular: Teaches how to analyse results and data using appropriate qualitative and quantitative methods. Critically analyses literature from a variety of sources. Raises awareness of the serious adverse implications of plagiarism. Explores the methods used to reference the work of others Gives you the confidence to succeed in your master’s degree.
What is the Master's Pre-sessional course? Orientation to Western Study : To introduce and enable an understanding of the policies, procedures and regulations affecting study in the West. Lectures: Every 2 weeks. Lectures form the platform for tasks that contribute to the EAP grade. Research Methods: planning a research project; cultivates study skills such as seminars and tutorial discussion skills; and group work. This includes a literature review where you will plan a group research project and write up an individual project proposal. A full time/part time (delete as appropriate) course designed for international students delivered over 10 weeks for students who want to improve their English language and academic study skills to ensure they are fully prepared for a master’s degree You will enhance your research skills by learning to effectively source and evaluate information, undertake a literature review to enhance academic skills, and learn to manage roles and responsibilities by working as part of a group.
English for Academic Purposes NCUK’s EAP is equivalent to IELTS and is acceptable for visa requirements for study at NCUK universities. Offers made on an IELTS-equivalency basis A = IELTS 7.0 B = IELTS 6.5 C = IELTS 6.0 D = IELTS 5.5 E = IELTS 5.0 Whilst studying the Master's Preparation, you will also take our English for Academic Purposes ( EAP) module, which provides essential language preparation for university study. This module allows you to develop your English language skills, helping you to improve your English speaking , listening , and writing .

Assessment of the Master's Preparation Students receive two overall grades for the Master’s Preparation: + Research Methods A classification of Distinction, Credit or Pass for Research Methods EAP A grade from A – U for EAP
Assessment of the Research Methods Module – (Master's Preparation) To produce a research proposal for a Pre-Master’s dissertation on a topic which, where possible, will be relevant to the postgraduate course the student hopes to progress to. 20% Research Methods grade Individual Project Proposal Plan Research Project Report (Dissertation) 80% Research Methods grade + 50% of EAP writing grade Working independently, students will carry out the research outlined in the Individual Project Proposal and write up the work in a report (dissertation). The dissertation will be the equivalent to a 3rd year undergraduate project at a UK university. Research Project Presentation 50% of EAP speaking grade Students are expected to prepare and give a timed presentation on the research project. The presentation must: Cover all key points within the time limit. Be well structured and audience appropriate. Be accompanied by supporting slides. Students will also be expected to answer 3-5 follow up questions.
Assessment of the Research Methods Module - (Master's Pre-sessional) Research Publication Analysis x2 10% (2 assessments 5% each) Working individually, students are required to analyse and evaluate 3 articles. They must: Convey the information contained in the articles. Convey their own analysis and conclusions. Maintain the integrity of the information being summarised. Group Research Proposal Design 20% overall grade This assessment will be carried out in small groups and will help prepare students for the individual Proposal Specification and Plan task. Each group will: select a topic from a list of current research topics/trends. investigate their chosen topic and identify the current research themes. Research Proposal (Specification and Plan) 70% of overall grade + 50% of EAP Writing grade To produce a research proposal for a Pre-Master’s dissertation on a topic which, where possible, will be relevant to the postgraduate course the student hopes to progress to.

Entry Requirements Master’s Preparation Enhanced three-year diplomas plus work experience with a level of English equivalent to at least IELTs 5.0 or equivalent graduates, or final year undergraduates, with an English language level equivalent to at least IELTs 5.0 or equivalent. Master’s Preparation undergraduate degree holders or final year undergraduates with a level of English equivalent to at least IELS 5.5 or equivalent. Master’s Pre-Sessional undergraduate degree holders or final year undergraduates with a level of English equivalent to at least IELTs 5.5 or equivalent. For full details of the entry requirements for your country, please visit the NCUK website: www.ncuk.ac.uk / ncuk -qualifications In most cases, you should have completed a degree/diploma in a subject closely related to your intended master’s course. Some universities offer a limited number of master’s ‘conversion courses’ which allow students with different subject backgrounds to apply. Work experience is not essential for entry to the Master’s Preparation or Master’s Pre-Sessional, but may be required for progression to specific master’s degree courses, for example, MBA courses. Our dedicated team at NCUK can advise you on the master’s progression options open to students but generally, students should have either completed a bachelor’s degree or a Chinese 3-year diploma or be in the process of studying the final year of their qualification.

Each year, NCUK awards a number of awards to students from across the NCUK Global Network. Academic Prize Awards are awarded to students based on academic merit.
