MATH FRACTIONS WEEK 4 5TH GRADE

CONTENTS OF THE WEEK 01 Monday Presidents ’ day 04 Thursday 03 Wednesday 02 Tuesday NOTES Excellent week . Rewrite Fractions with a Common Denominator Equivalent fractions Module review

Objectives of the week . Use equivalent fractions to rewrite pairs of fractions with a common denominator. Describe how to use multiples of a denominator to write equivalent fractions. Explain how to find equivalent fractions to express pairs of fractions with a common denominator.

Equivalent fractions Tuesday February 18th 2025 Day 2

What Is a Fraction? A  fraction  represents parts of a whole where the whole is divided into equal parts. In a fraction, pq , the p is the  numerator  that tells us about the number of parts we have taken; and q is the  denominator  that defines the total parts the whole object is divided into.

Definition of Equivalent Fractions The fractions that represent the same value but look different( i.e different numerators or denominators) are called equivalent fractions. In other words, two or more fractions are said to be equivalent fractions if they are equal to the same fraction after we simplify them.

How to Find the Common Denominator for Unlike Fractions. LCM Method This method involves finding the least common denominator (LCD) for the two fractions. To do this, we list the multiples of each denominator and identify the lowest common multiple (LCM) among them.

Possible questions: How much slime do you make? Of which ingredient do you need the greatest amount? How much water do you need to make twice the amount? Our question to think about: How can you use a visual model to estimate the total number of liters of ingredients she mixes together?   Common Error Turn & Talk Strategy 2 Ms. Fong mixes water, glue, and laundry detergent together to make slime. What Are Benchmark Fractions ? In math, benchmark fractions can be defined as fractions that we can use when measuring, comparing, or ordering other fractions. They are used as a “benchmark” for other common factors. Common benchmark fractions examples: 0,1,14,12 , etc. These fractions are most helpful when the fractions are to be compared or to be placed on a number line. Here’s a benchmark fractions chart placed on a number line, which can help you compare fractions:

the fraction strip

Let’s compare the unlike fractions 3/5 and 7/8 easily using this chart. Observe the one-fifth strip and the one-eighth strip. The 3 parts of the one-fifth strip represent 3/5 and the 7 parts of the one-eighth strip 7/8. Comparing the region occupied by the shaded parts, we get 3/5 < 7/8.

“ Which donut is approximately half-eaten? Which donut is nearly whole, and which one is almost gone?”
