Lesson 1: Factorial Notation Elmira A. Agcon Mathematics 10 – Third Quarter

Objectives: define factorial notation; and evaluate factorial notations.

! Factorial Notation

Factorial Notation n factorial is denoted by n!. It is the product of all positive integers less than or equal to n. 5! Can be read as “5 factorial” It means (5)(4)(3)(2)(1) which is equal to 120. (5)(4)! (5)(4)(3)! (5)(4)(3)(2)! (5)(4)(3)(2)(1)

Factorial Notation

Factorial Notation 5! + 2! = (5 2. 8! – 5! = (8 = 40, 320 – 120 = 40, 200   Evaluate the following expressions:

Factorial Notation 3. 4! 2! = (4 = (24)(2) = 48 4. = = 120   Evaluate the following expressions:

Factorial Notation 5. 6.   Evaluate the following expressions:

Factorial Notation 5! = 5 3! + 3! = 6! 4! = 9! = 10   Determine whether each of the following equation is True or False

Factorial Notation 5! = 5 TRUE 3! + 3! = 6! FALSE 4! = 9! FALSE = 10 TRUE   Determine whether each of the following equation is True or False
