INTRODUCTION
´Maxillary artery is the larger terminal branch of external carotid artery given
off behind the neck of the mandible
´It has wide territory of distribution and supplies
´External ,middle ears and auditory tube

´The upper and lower jaws
´The palate and root of pharynx

´The nose and paranasal sinuses

COURSE
Dissection
´External carotid artery divides into its two terminal branches, maxillary and
superficial temporal on the anteromedialsurface of the parotid gland. The
maxillary artery, appears in this region

The maxillary artery is divided into 3 parts by the LATERAL PTERYGOIDMUSCLE
1.the first part ( mandibular part)
2.The second part (pterygoidpart)
3.The third part (pterygopalatinepart)

The first part(mandibular part)
1. The first (mandibular)
part runs horizontally
forwards, first between
the neck of the
mandible and the
sphenomandibular
ligament, below the
auriculo-temporal
nerve and then along
the lower border of
lateral pterygoid

The second part(pterygoidpart)
´The second (pterygoid) part runs upwards and forwards superficial to the
lower head of the lateral pterygoid.

The third part(pterygopalatinepart)
´The third (pterygopalatine) part passes between the two heads of the
lateral pterygoidand through the pterygomaxillaryfissure, to enter the
pterygopalatinefossa where it lies in front ofthe pterygopalatineganglion
