Lesson 18.1 The Purpose of Research
At the end of this lesson, you should be able to analyze the purpose of a research report.
Why is research important in any field of study?
Share with a seatmate three issues or events that you are curious about in your community. These issues must be ones that you cannot easily find the details or explanation of in any reference, whether in print or online. Share your answers in class. Think-Pair-Share
quasi (adjective) - in resemblance of something They are representing a quasi corporation, and that makes us doubt their intention. verify (verb) - to establish accuracy of something Researchers verify information first before including it in their paper. Unlocking of Difficulty
standardized (adjective) - consistently conforms to a set of rules Students take standardized tests every year. valid (adjective) - effective to use A test must be valid in order to get accurate results. Unlocking of Difficulty
reliable (adjective) - gives the same results in a series of trials Aside from validity, researchers also verify if the tool for the research is reliable. Unlocking of Difficulty
the collection of information about a particular subject studious inquiry or examination Research
Conceptual question - Research that answers this kind of question helps its readers to understand the subject better. Practical question - Research that answers this kind of question offers or gives its readers information on how to address or fix a problem. Types of Research Questions
Qualitative approach main purpose: to understand and interpret social interactions focuses on a small group whose subjects are not randomly selected data gathering: focus group discussion, interview each participant, participate or observe in the discussion Main Approaches to Conducting Research
Quantitative approach main purpose: to test hypotheses, analyze causes and effects, and make predictions randomly selects subjects from a large group data gathering: surveys (e.g.: online and paper surveys), telephone interviews, and online polls Main Approaches to Conducting Research
Three Research Approaches Adapted from John W. Creswell (2014) Effects of the Integrated Listening Model on the Listening Comprehension of Junior High School Students
What is the topic of the study? Cite details to justify your answer. How does the researcher plan to gather data in the study? What types of research questions are used in the study? Explain your answer. Guide Questions
4. What research approach is employed in the study? Explain your answer. 5. How would you describe the language and tone of the researcher in the study? Guide Questions
Identify the type of research question. Write C if it is a conceptual question and P if it is a practical question. What are the factors that lead to the death of a language? How can memes help in expressing one’s self? Which proposal is the best solution in bridging the gender gap? Conceptual Questions vs. Practical Questions
How effective are frogs in preventing dengue? How can changing coding schemes help in solving the heavy traffic situation on EDSA? How does a student’s home environment affect his or her behavior in school? What influences students’ decision making? How does a growth mindset affect a students’ concept of the self? How do educators perceive social-emotional learning? How can creative journaling help people with trauma?
Think of one social issue that you want to learn more about. Create three research questions about your topic and explain what type of research approach is the most applicable if you will conduct a study about your chosen social issue. You must write your answers in an essay with 300 to 400 words. Your essay will be graded based on the rubric on the next slides. Preliminary Writing

The Philippine government allocates billions of pesos every year for our research and development institutes. Why do you think it is essential? How can research help the growth and development of our country? Values Integration
Learn, Relearn, Unlearn Form groups of three. Accomplish the table below. Share your answers in class. What new research concepts did you learn? What research concept did you have to relearn? What research concepts do you need to unlearn?
Look for one problem cited/explained in a news article. Write a short essay on how you are going to use research to find a solution for the said problem. Assignment
