TRAINING FOR MOTOR COMPONENT - CO-ORDINATION Prof . Dr. A.MAHABOOBJAN Bharathidasan University, Tiruchirappalli, Tamilnadu, India.

CO-ORDINATION It is the ability as relatively stabilities and generalized pattern of motor control and regulation of movement. It is the ability determined by the mechanisms involved in the control and regulation of movement.   These abilities are depend upon the coordinative process of central nervous system and various sense organs important for movement control and regulation. Eg . Vestibular organs, kinesthetic receptors etc…

Forms of Co- ordinative Abilities Orientation Ability Coupling Ability Differentiation Ability Balance Ability Rhythm Ability Reaction Ability Reaction Ability

1 . Orientation Ability The ability to determine the position of the body and its parts in time and space in relation to gravity, playing field, other players, ball, equipment etc. are called orientation ability. This ability depends upon the functional capacity of the sensory organs such as eyes, vestibular organs and kinesthetic receptors.

2. Coupling Ability It is the ability to combine the movements of various body parts for successful execution of sports movements and also to combine various simple movements into a meaningful and effective motor action . It largely depends upon the kinesthetic and optic sense organs.

3. Differentiation Ability It is the ability of achieving high degree of accuracy and economy of body movements in a motor action. The ball senses, movement sense, water sense, feeling of particular equipment, pace, judgment are the expressions of differentiation ability . It largely depends upon the kinesthetic sense organs.

4. Balance Ability It is the ability to maintain body equilibrium under static or dynamic conditions. (Movement performed on a small base or an unstable base). This ability important for gymnastics, acrobatics, swimming, water sports, combative sports etc.. It depends upon the functional capacity of the vestibular organs.

5. Rhythm Ability It is the ability to perceive the rhythm of a movement and to do the movement with the required rhythm. It depends upon the cyclic and non-cyclic movements, further the functional capacity of the acoustic, optic and kinesthetic sense organs.

6. Reaction Ability It is the ability to react meaningfully to a signal in minimum possible time. Reaction ability is the time elapsed between signal and start of the response . It is the ability to respond to a stimulus in the shortest possible time. It depends upon the acoustic, optic signals.

7. Adaptations Ability It is the ability to change the movements effectively according to the changed or changing situation. This ability is linked with experience, technical and tactical efficiency, reaction ability and with other coordinative abilities. It depends upon the functional capacity of the acoustic, optic, tactile and kinesthetic sense organs.

Methods of Improving Co- ordinative Abilities Physical Exercise Suitable General and Special Exercise Movement should be Executed Correctly and Consciously Means for Improving Functional Capacity of Motor Sense Organs Development of Co- ordinative Abilities Variation of Exercise Degree of difficulty Systematically Increased

Methods of Improving Co- ordinative Abilities Cond … 1 . Physical Exercise: Through enough variation in physical exercise motor co-ordination can be developed. While practicing several variations should be done through which co- ordinative abilities can be developed effectively. 2. Suitable General and Special Exercise: Different types of exercises should be done to improve general co- ordinative abilities and specific exercise should be selected to improve specific abilities.

Methods of Improving Co- ordinative Abilities Cond … 3. Movement should be Executed Correctly and Consciously: The movements must be done correctly and consciously with concentration. It enables the sportsman to control and regulation of movements. For teaching the exercises audio-visual aids should be used. 4. Means for Improving Functional Capacity of Motor Sense Organs: The co- ordinative abilities depend on the functional capacity of varies sense organs such as acoustic, optic, tactile, kinesthetic and vestibular. The functional capacity of these organs can be improved by doing which the sportsman remains physically passive.

Methods of Improving Co- ordinative Abilities Cond … 5. Development of Co- ordinative Abilities: Through physical exercises several co- ordinative abilities can be improved. For the faster and effective improvement of co- ordinative ability the exercise should be modified to improve a single co- ordinative ability. 6. Variation of Exercise : Limited number of exercise does not give desired results because each set of exercises have effect for a certain period of time. Therefore the exercise can be changed frequently. Hence the sportsman should be continuously doing new and unaccustomed exercise for best effect.

Methods of Improving Co- ordinative Abilities Cond … 7. Degree of Difficulty Systematically Increased: For the improvement of co- ordinative abilities the degree of difficulty of physical exercises should be systematically increased. The important methods of increasing the degree of difficulty commonly used through the following means Variation in movement execution Change in the external condition Combination of movements Change in information uptake Practice against time Practice under fatigue
