MASSIVE OPEN ONLINE COURSE (MOOC)
BIG PLAYERS OF MOOCs 01 TWO CATEGORIES OF MOOC 02 ADVANTAGES AND DISADVANTAGES OF MOOCs 03
MOOCs Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs , are online courses that allow participants free access and unrestricted participation to any course of their choice. MOOCs also provide a platform for interactive forums. It is also one of the custom eLearning methodologies that encourages self-paced learning which remains focused on the skills that the learners wish to hone. Although MOOCs don’t always provide an academic credit, they give students a useful grounding in the subject matter and may provide necessary background for further education or certification. The word MOOC was coined in 2008 by Dave Cormier from the University of Prince Edward Island for a course offered by the University of Manitoba “Connectivism and Connective Knowledge”. There were 25 tuition-paying students from University and 2,300non-paying students from the general public who took the course online. In 2011, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) OpenCourseWare(OCW) became the first large collections of MOOC resources made available by the University. In 2012 MIT and Harvard spearheaded the edX initiative for the promotion of MOOCs.

TWO CATEGORIES OF MOOC
TWO CATEGORIES OF MOOC 1. cMOOCs are MOOCs that allow for dynamic development of study material. That is, instead of having a pre-planned set of reading materials and courseware, the material will be developed through online discussions and collaborations among learners taking the course across the globe.

TWO CATEGORIES OF MOOC 2. xMOOCs , on the other hand, believe in the conventional approach where the courses are well-structured with pre-selected reading and reference materials. - xMOOCs are based on a more traditional classroom structure: They are a combination a pre-recorded video lecture with quizzes, tests, or other assessments . xMOOCs are centered around a professor rather than around a community of students.

THE ADVANTAGES OF MOOCs
The Advantages of MOOCs 1. Courses are offered for free 2. Access to courses offered by professors at the top schools 3. Courses are available to a vast and diverse audience across the globe 4. Learners’ performance can be monitored easily using the data captured during the start of courses
The Advantages of MOOCs 5. Both professors and learners get world-wide exposure, thus improving pedagogical techniques and knowledge sharing. 6. Can be used as a tool in a blended learning program, where students can access more information than what is provided in the class
The Advantages of MOOCs 7. Learn from peers around the world. 8. Prepare you academically for college. 9. Let you test out your major before committing.
