IMPORTANCE
Topical drugs are primarily used to treat
pain, swelling, and infection. This segment
of medication is typically used to non-
invasively treat minor conditions.

INDICATIONS
Topical medications are applied directly to
the body surfaces, including the skin and
mucous membranes of the eyes, ears, nose,
vagina, and rectum.

Topical medicine should only be
applied to the affected areas.
Always wear gloves and maintain
standard precautions when
administering topical medications to
the skin, mucous membranes, and
tissues.
Do not touch any preparations to your
own skin, and turn your face away from
powdered applications.
Always clean the skin or wound before
applying a new dose of topical
medication.
NURSING CONSIDERATIONS

TERRASIL
MEDICATION:
Cures most fungal skin infections, including ringworm
and tinea. For effective relief of itching, scaling,
cracking, burning, discoloration, soreness, irritation,
discomfort, redness

IMPORTANCE
It is used to treat and prevent eye diseases.
Eye drops and ointments (salves) are the
most common ways to medicate the eye.

INDICATIONS
It is most common therapeutic use to
people with glaucoma, eye infections,
allergy and inflammation (redness) of the
eye.

DOCTOR’S INDICATION
Check the same rights of medication administration
as done with other types of medication. Prior to
administration of eye medication, the patient's eyes
should be assessed for new or unusual redness or
drainage.

AZELASTINE
Type of Medicine: Antihistamine Eye Drop
Used for: Remove symptoms of Allergic
Conjunctivitis
Also called: Optilast
MEDICATION: ADULT

ERYTHROMYCIN
Opthalmic preparations used to treat infections of
the eye. They also may be used to prevent certain
eye infections of newborn babies, such as neonatal
conjunctivitis and ophthalmia neonatorum.

IMPORTANCE
Ear medication can help treat pain,
inflammation, infection and earwax
blockage

INDICATIONS
Some individuals produce an excess of
earwax buildup.
Ear infections (acute otitis media) occur
when fluid becomes trapped in the middle
ear.

MASSAGING TRAGUS-TRIANGLE
Make sure the solution is kept at room
temperature
Gently massage the tragus unless
contraindicated because of pain.

If irrigating the ear canal, never put a
syringe directly into the canal or
forcefully put medication in the ear

ADMINISTRATION:
Children less than 3 years of age, pull the
Pinna/Auricle back and downwards. Place 5
drops in each affected ear two times a day for
ten days.
CHILD - BACK AND DOWNWARD01
Pull the Pinna/Auricle (outer part of the ear) back and
upwards. Place 10 drops in each affected ear two
times a day for ten to fourteen days, depending on
the infection.

Keep the patient in the side-lying position or
keep the ear facing upward for 2-3 minutes

OFLOXACIN SOLUTION
MEDICATION
This medication belongs to a class of drugs called
quinolone antibiotics that takes effect within 48 to
72 hours and have minimal or no symptoms by 7
days.
