Meaning and concept “Thinking about thinking ” or “learning how to learn.” “ cognition about cognition”, or “knowing about knowing ”.
Strategy
How metacognition can be implemented in classroom? Use a Gradual Release Approach Integrate Self-Assessment What they have already know (prior knowledge) What they don’t know (areas of improvement) What they want to master (their goals) What they will do to improve (action plan) Practice Visualization helps improve executive functioning skills. Incorporate Project Management Allow Mistakes and Reward Risk-Taking
Recommended Instructional Strategies Teachers can incorporate into lesson plans . opportunities for learners to practice using these questions during learning tasks During the planning phase Learners can ask, What am I supposed to learn? What prior knowledge will help me with this task? During the monitoring phase Learners can ask, How am I doing? Am I on the right track? How should I proceed? During the evaluation phase Learners can ask, How well did I do? What did I learn? Did I get the results I expected?
Benefits of metacognition Help students become aware of their strengths and weaknesses . One is able to- Recognize the limit of one’s knowledge or ability Then figure out how to expand that knowledge or extend the ability. Those who know their strengths and weaknesses are able to- actively monitor their learning strategies and resources. assess their readiness for particular tasks and performances.
Benefits Changes the fixed versus growth mindset about students’ ability to learn. Increased student ownership of learning and students taking control over their own learning. More positive attitudes in relation to school and learning. Improved performance not only academic but also in relation to behavioral performance
Other benefits … Makes able to differentiate between what’s right and wrong Makes the person able to see different perspectives Broadens horizon of knowledge and understanding. Builds personality and self-evaluation and self-regulation ability.
Conclusion Metacognition refers to higher order thinking Process includes- Planning Monitoring Evaluation Broadens horizon of knowledge, builds personality and widens perspective of thinking.
