PROBLEM STATEMENT A study to assess awareness regarding first aid management of dog bite among adults residing in selected areas of district Ludhiana, Punjab.
Aim: To assess the level of awareness regarding first aid management of dog bite among adults.
OBJECTIVE: To assess the level of awareness regarding first aid management of dog bite among adults. To find out association of awareness regarding first aid management of dog bite with selected socio demographic characteristics of adults. To plan and provide IEC material in form of educational pamphlets on first aid management of dog bite.
INTRODUCTION: Health is a fundamental human right , where national government all over the world are thriving to expand and improve their healthcare services to overcome a continuous threat from emergence diseases. Rabies is a fatal zoonotic disease, posing a major health risk in countries where it is endemic . While rabies is fully preventable through prompt administration of post exposure prophylaxis to bite victims. Dogs are most important reservoir of rabies with dog bites , being the primary cause of human rabies cases in south-east A sia region . The rural population is more likely to suffer higher mortality rates due to lack of awareness of disease, insufficient financial resources, overemphasis on the use of traditional practices , unavailability of prophylactic measures in the form of wound cleaning and administration of post exposure prophylaxis .
NEED FOR STUDY As per WHO, the dog bite accounts for 10 million injuries worldwide, it is estimated that south east Asia carries 45% of global burden of dog mediated human rabies. The ministry of health and family welfare reports the incidence of dog bite in India have seen a 26.5%year to year increase, from 2.18 million incidents in 2022 to 2.75 million incident in 2023. In last five year, Punjab records 7 lakh incidents of dog bite with an average of 550 dog bite cases each day in Punjab. According to recent survey (Bharti. V, the tribune news service), Ludhiana has contributed 17,309 cases up till September, 2023. A research was conducted by ( Virmala . S) which claimed that the level of knowledge on first aid management of dog bite and treatment modality of rabies among (26%) population was inadequate, in (70%) population was moderate and among (3.3%) population it was adequate. Hence, the researcher felt from the intensive review of literature and community posting there is the need to create the awareness of first aid management regarding dog bite among the local population so that we will prevent the deaths which can be caused due to the animal bite.
Operational Definitions: Awareness: It refers to the information possessed by the individuals related to first aid management of dog bite. First Aid Management: It refers to the immediate care given to person who is having unexpected dog bite, which involves cleaning of wound with soap and water, application of antiseptic solution and covering it with a sterile dressing to prevent from infection etc. Dog Bite: I t refers to the injury caused as a bite wound inflicted by a dog during which pressure is exerted by a dog's jaw which leads to significant damage to tissues under the skin, including bones, muscles, tendons, blood vessels and nerves. Adults: It refers to the male and female individuals of age group 20-60 years.
Assumption/hypothesis : Adults may have awareness regarding the first aid management of dog bite.
Delimitations: The study will be delimited to 340 adult of Urban area- Guru Gobind Singh Nagar, Shimlapuri, District Ludhiana, Punjab Rural area- Malakpur, District Ludhiana, Punjab

The study finding showed that 73.33% had average knowledge, 18.33% had poor knowledge and 8.3% had good knowledge. It is concluded that the knowledge among people(21-40years) regarding dog bite and prevention of rabies was not sufficient

This study concludes that there is inadequate knowledge on first aid management of dog bite ad treatment modalities of rabies among adults.
Methodology Inclusion Criteria - Adults willing to participate. of age group 20-60 years. Exclusion Criteria -Adults Not able to understand Hindi, Punjabi and English language. Already diagnosed with psychiatric illness.

Methodology Research approach – A quantitative approach will be used. Research design – A descriptive research design will be used. Research setting – The study will be conducted in Shimlapuri (urban) and Malakpur (rural), District Ludhiana, Punjab.
